Treating with Vitamin C

How long after adding vitamin C does it take for everyones skimmer to act up and how long does it last?

Can anyone help me with my dinoflagellete problem. It was mentioned earlier that the Vit C was the most likely source, but I haven't been able to get rid of them. I have had a much reduced lighting period. For a few days, the tank was completely unlit, but I still have them. I siphon them off as much as possible and have done many water changes. Also, I have been trying to raise alk and pH, but no luck yet.

I remember commenting on your dino problem. I cant believe that a normal dose of vitamin c dosed correctly in a tank with proper water parameters would cause this problem or we would all have the same problem. I would think that the dino problem is unrelated and the increase of light reaching your tank due to clearer water with vitamin c dosing may be part of the problem. Dinoflagellete did not enter your tank with store bought vitimins, that I am sure of. You must surely have an underlying problem.

I don't know what it could be though. I am running a skimmer and phosban reactor on a 30g and do about 10 gallons worth of water changes a week.

I'm using the pure buffered VC from Iherb.com, but after I dose my PH will drop a half a point if I don't add a buffer. I wondered if you had that problem when you dosed?

But you said earlier: "It was mentioned earlier that the Vit C was the most likely source". You were the one that "mentioned earlier that Vit C was most likely the source", no one else did. Blaming vitamin c really isnt the answer to your dino problem. It most likely helped fuel an existing problem but it didnt cause the problem. That is what I am trying to get across. I dont want people reading this thread to think that dosing vitamin c causes dinoflagelletes. I wish I could help you with some experience in the subject of dinoflagelletes, but I dont know enough about them. If it were me I would concentrate my efforts on correcting the dino problem.

I don't claim that Vit C introduced dinos to my tank. There have been multiple people that have had this pop up after starting dosing though. I agree w/ what you have to say, now I'm looking for a way to get rid of it.

I add VC to my Mantis shrimp tank just for better skimmer function & lower nitrate. I'd say, there are more bubbles right after adding (I can hear it fizzing in my HOB skimmer, since I add the VC under the cup) but I don't sit & watch it much after that. Improved skimmer function all around, all the time. I was planning on doing a mesh mod on my ASM G-2 but not necessary anymore.

don't ask me where I saw this, but I remember reading that water changes can make your dino problem worse if you have it. Like adding fuel to the fire. Don't ask me why, I just read that somewhere. They said you can get rid of it without water changes....just look up dino on the search...

You're not dreaming it up. It's from Julian Sprung's book on Problem Algae I believe. He recommends not doing water changes and just changing out carbon. I was hesitant about doing it myself but I was at wits ends with it. It worked! This was almost two years ago. But, I also got the fundamental cause under control too - which was old bulbs and overfeeding.

Okay. My bulbs aren't old, but the ones that came stocked with it. I'll get rid of them and get new ones. I've got all his books and they all recommend that, but I feel like a water change is necessary after two weeks. Thanks again.

If your nitrate is close to 0, you probably don't need a WC. In that case, I just add essential elements. It's not like FW... What kind of bulbs? How old?

150 watt MH w/ 4 T5 supplemental. Less than 6 months. All params in line last time I checked. I'll test again tomorrow.

I just got a PM from a friend that did a Google search and found that if you use this code: FOR500, you get $5 off at www.i-herb.com.

Hi Puffer, I decided to jump on the bandwagon! woo hoo!
I took some pics today and I'm using regular VC until my iHerb order comes in. I used your code for the $5.00 which is really nice ;), now Ill get back to reading, I've been at it since last night!
