Treating with Vitamin C

I have has some problems with polyp extension on some sps. I thought some others also had this problem. Didn't seem to kill them though, as my birds nest seems to be starting some new branches.

My BTAs developed bubbles with the vit c so it seems to benefit them. Others have noticed this as well. Would be cool to see an LTA with curly tentacles like I only see in pictures.

Jeni I know you said you were adding vit c to your mantis shrimp system for improved skimmer function. Sugar or vodka would be a cheaper way of achieving this, and easier to obtain. I know you don't like dosing vodka. But it is your tank and you can get those results any way you please. Just a suggestion. :)

Ok, I lost my lokani overnight it's skin is falling off in shreds. I dosed 30PPM this was a gradual dosage in the tank per instructions. My tubs don't look any better, so go figure. All my tank params have stayed stable. Nothing else has been done to the tank except the higher dosage of VitC. Not sure what to do now.

Has anyone who had bad hair/byropsis/etc. algae been dosing Vit C? What impact, if any, have you seen on the algae?

Paintguru, I'm currently dosing VC and batteling byropsis :blown: . I've also raised my Mag to 1500 to battle the bryopsis, which seems to be working now. Both dosings seem to be doing well. No adverse effects at this time to report  Since the elevated mag, my byropsis is now dying back somewhat, as I think the elevated mag has begun to break it down. It's all turning yellow and falling apart :strooper: My skimmer is cranking the yuck out. I've noticed a slight difference in my zoas, but not like puffer is reporting, more like no more decline, closing up. The group that had died back is now gaining with some new small polyps. I was dosing C some time back after I came across this thread and then ran out of the one bottle of VC I bought. I'd recommend to all to buy 2 or 3 bottles as the stuff disapears quickly. I've since ordered a new batch of VC from I-herb and have been dosing 2x/day for about 5 days now along with my mag dosing schedule. I don't seem to have the slime algae or diatoms that others are reporting, but then I have about 30x turn over flow in my tank  One more thing. I also run a phosban reactor with GFO 24/7, have a bag of carbon in my sump and most of the time, have a bag of purigen in my sump. I dilute the VC in tank water and pour slowly into the display tank near my returns.

ok I skimmed through this thread an I have a biocube 29 here is what I got for my tank can someone make sure this is the right dosage thanks

For your 25g tank

Day 1: 5ppm=125mg
Day 2: 10ppm=375mg
Day 3: 30ppm=750mg
Day 4: 50ppm-1250

After day 4, continue treating with a concentration of 50 ppm for 10 more days

this is my beautiful colony before it turned sick

Guys, incredible thread, i last read through this when it was like 5 pg.s long. I'm just curious, any one have any negative affects with anemones? I have a monster lta in my tank but my zoa's have started not looking so hot and i would like to start dosing. apreciate it

jason, I have a GBTA that is quite large and so far have had no adverse effects dosing VC. I just re-instated my VC dosing. I had dosed a while back and then had to stop as I ran out of product. There was somebody back further in the theatre, before the split, that did report bleaching of his anem. I don't think he lost the enem and couldn't attribute it to the VC dosing. Worth going back to read up!

I thought I had things figured out but my Alk tested 17 today. My calcium was 310. My water is clear again finally. The calcium supplement has an additive for mag. Do you think that is messing up my alk? I have no way of testing my mag.

Sounds like a mag test is in order. It's all a delicate balance. I'd go get your parameters tested at the LFS. What kits are you using?

You need to stop dosing vc until your alk lowers. I had the same issue with high alk/ cloudy water for a few days. I stoped until my alk was lower and then continued lower dose of vc. I also had a small diatom outbreak when I stoped.

my alk is spiking too...was up to 15....had to recussitate a b&w clown in my other tank...

using sodium ascorbate from iherb....i'm discontinuing treatment...cant see myself dosing this stuff anymore...numerous alk tests and emergency water changes are no fun

No emergency here... stopped dosing alk after it went to 14 about a month ago & now it's <10. I'll probably start dosing small amounts again in a week, 1x/wk & see what happens.

Some after pics.
Thee zo's had been closed for weeks before I started using VC.
Now they are open day and night.

Ten Days after and continuing.
This pic was taken today but it is what they have been since I reached the ten day point.

I think I did way back.
I will dig them up and post them together.

FWIW, I thought this whole thing was...hooie.

I have noticed NOTHING detrimental to the process, however, my skimmate foam is...different.

So you don't think it's hooie anymore???

I was just going to mod my skimmer when I started dosing VC. Even after a week, there wasn't enough skimmate to bother emptying the cup. Now I empty the cup of thick, stinky skimmate, 3x/week. The cup is always full of bubbles. I lowered the output tube as low as it will go too.
