Treating with Vitamin C

I edited my above post to include before and after's.

My skimmer doesn't skim better...I have a really kick butt skimmer though, hard to make it run any better. ;)

It's foam is just "different".

I just started VC last friday, and I too noticed that my skimmer cup has more bubbles in it than it did before. I got really good skim from it before, so its not a huge improvement, but it is better.

I just bought and used Kent Marine Vitamin C solution. The bottle says to use 20 drops per day. That seems very high to me. Has anyone used this supplement before? Any suggestions as to how much I should use per day or per week?

Considering I dose 2tsp (~9500mg) of VC to my 100g system, I would think even 20 drops of Kent's C is a tiny amount.

I hopped on the C train yesterday morning. I'm dosing with NutriBiotic, Sodium Ascorbate Crystalline Powder I purchased at iherb dot com. The reason why I chose to start dosing is because I have a really nice frag of zoas that started to get the same brown fungus on them Pufferpunk showed on her Tubbs blue. I have a mixed reef and everything seems to be doing fine so far. All my parameters are good. I took some before shots and will update in a week or so. ;)

Ok, here are my blue zoos before and after....
The highest dosage I ever went was 30ppm, but I lost an SPS with that. So, I just dosed 10ppm/day.
IMO, zoos take awhile to show any signs of recovery. This is the first time that I've had zoos come back from the brown slime that was bothering them (I typically loose the entire colony).

After (not fully recovered, but polyps opening)

Yeah, I'm pretty positive it was the VC because nothing had changed in the tank and all my params were good.

The only thing I did was change the dosage as recommended from 15ppm to 30 ppm. I think doubling that dosage was too extreme for the one SPS. I backed down immediately to 10ppm/day and everything seems to be fine.
Now I only dose VC 10ppm/day not twice as suggested. I think going slower is a better way to go at least in my tank. I'm definitely pleased with the VC results on my blue zoos and overall other issues. I rarely have to scrape my glass for algae and my substrate stays white without me stirring it constantly.

Thanks Puffer for all this info!

Has anyone bothered to check if their nitrate has gone down w/dosing? I dose my 15g mantis tank just to keep tne nitrate down. Used to be >100 every week & I had to do 80% WC. Now even without WC, it always remains <10.

The zoas I tried to save completely melted away after the 3rd day of dosing. I've discontinued the dosing of VitC for now since the whole reason I started in the first place was to save my special zoas. ;(

Btw, a couple of my yumas and SPS did not like the VitC dosing. The red yuma started to shrivel up and bleach after day 1.

How much were you dosing? Did you check your alk & pH? I have some pretty expensive yumas that are doing fine & my SPS haven't been harmed at all either, even at 23ppm.

I started at 1/16 of a tsp the first day in a 145g system. When I dosed 1/8 tsp on the 2nd day (which I probably shouldn't have done) is when everything started to go downhill. All my parameters were fine. I tested them 3 x a day. My ph/alk didn't budge at all.

Here is a pic of the zoas I had. The first pic is the day before I started dosing and the 2nd pic is 4 days after dosing.

Awww... those were nice. I'm sorry you couldn't save them. Considering I'm adding 2tsp, 2x/day to my 100g system, I do not believe the small amount you added had anything to do with the problems you had. Just a coincidence, IMO. If you had added more (starting at 5ppm & upping it as the chart says), you might have been able to save those palys.

I am adding 1/4tsp to my 15g tank & started there.

Jeni, stop telling people you have a 100 gallon system. After tons of live rock and stunning corals, you probably have 75 gallons of water left :p.

you have the same as me, I have a 90 g with 40g sump and when I filled it I was actually measuring the amount of water that went in after the rock and sand and it came to 82 gallons...
Right now I'm adding 2 tsps. to the 90 and 1/2 tsp. to the 24 g cube...
So it would seem I'm not adding enough, I thought I was.:eek1:

well I'm hopping on the bandwagon. Been reading this for several days and just got my VC from Iherb today. i have a 72 gallon bowfront with a 30 gallon sump with a G-2 skimmer. My tubbs have been closed up for a few days. wanting them to come back to full strength. May the vitamin C be strong with them!!!!
=)
