Treating with Vitamin C

I believe I remember reading that Vit C breaks down in saltwater after "X" amount of hours...is this so?

Is it the same in freshwater?

I would like to find a way to auto-dose this instead of the 2 x a day manual dosing.

I would think that to achieve a specific ppm of vitamin c that you would need to dose it all at once. Unless I am wrong keep that in mind when figuring out a way to dose it.

Jeff is correct. If you need to get the levels up to a certain ppm at one time, a drip won't do it.

I am thinking of a dosing pump that will add as much as you program it too.
If the Vit C does not break down in RODI water, it would be easy to determine how much to dose.

As soon as it hits the water (even air), it starts to break down.

I have noticed after about a week of dosing that there is alot clear slime building up in sump/filter socks. Is that normal?

Yes, this is also why our skimmers work better, nitrate is reduced & our tanks look clearer. It is breaking down a lot of waste from our tank.

funny that you said out the slime.....I'm on my 4th day and my tank is doing the same thing.. It has done it before right when I set the tank up and now it is going on again...does this clear up after awhile on it's own? The first time took about 2 weeks...

Make sure your skimmer is functioning well & it will remove most of the waste.

I just bought a KICK A skimmer that is rated more than enough for my tank....so I should be all good...
I just want to make sure I'm doing this right
150g total water
5ppm------2838mg Vit C
10ppm----5676mg and so on
now do I dose 2x a day to = 2838 or do it all in one
as I get higher do I do it 2x a day to = the amount

A cell uses up all that VC within 8 hours, so dose the same amount each time as it was the 1st time doing it for the day. Does that make any sense?

so your saying that for 5ppm I dose 2838mg x2 a day so that way each time they are getting 5ppm ?

Happened to me as well...but I can't say I noticed an increase in skimmer output or clearer water. The slime is REALLY slimy though!

That is correct. You don't have to be exact, a couple of teaspoons should do the trick.

dose the Vit C make you tank get cloudy the first few days.. The day I started my tank has gotten cloudy...all my levels are ok..anybody else have this happen...everything in the tank looks ok...

I have heard of this happening. Be sure to check your alk & pH. What form of VC are you using, at what dosage?

Alk is 9
and Ph is 8.1
and 3336mg in a 150gallon system
