Treating with Vitamin C

While I can certainly appreciate what Peter said about things coming and going in the hobby, I am open to seeing the results of what others are experiencing too; that's why I am carefully listening, taking in all sides.

With that said, just wondered if anyone has seen a vast improvement in LPS corals with VC? (frogspawn is LPS)

Also, has anyone begun their VC dosing regime on tanks less than a year old with positive or negative results?

Just curious.... thanks to everyone who answered so far, it's appreciated.

My frogspawn is HUGE--show-size now. My Acans are going nuts with growth & color. Even the chalices have tripled in size.

Very Cool!

I read how you've been dosing VC for about, for what 5 months now, Puffy? Could you post some recent pics? I know you said you didn't have before shots, but just wondering if you had any from even a few months ago and some "now" shots? Would love to see your tank....I keep reading how beautiful the corals are! Plus, don't think I'll be getting to Chicago anytime soon LOL ;)

I think it's safe to say that if anybody has spent more then an hour or so reading thru this thread that they are interested in trying vitamin c dosing (or there is nothing on TV). I would estimate that there is a 90% sucess rate and the some of the other 10% failure rate is attributed to other problems in people's reefs that are blamed on vitamin c. I know Puffy and have been over to her house many times and have seen her successes but I was very skepticle for weeks and didnt participate until my curiousity peaked. In my opinion, which is based on my successful usage of the vitamin, skepticle people should take the plunge and follow Puffy's directions slowly (but exactly as this thread outlines) and discontinue use if there is a problem. No matter what, users of the vitamin should report their findings here to help others out with first-hand experience.

I was supposed to have a professional photographer take some pics of my tank but things were kind of going downhill right after I asked him. It's been >7 months since I started dosing & I am thrilled with how my tank finally looks. I've even been investing in high-end zoas again, with the confidence they won't melt away. I will try to take some pics in the next few weeks but I'm really busy (gone all this weekend).

Well said Jeff (how did you know there was nothing on TV last night? LOL ;) )!

I think I'm at the point you were originally....although not skeptic, I am highly curious and I'm just wanting to "see" more evidence I suppose (how about posting some of your own pics for us? Even if they aren't "before" shots...a sucessful tank is a successful tank so if theren't aren't "befores," no problem).

No one is doubting you or Puffy as I think both of you have provided some invaluable, hands-on experience here in this thread as have others. I believe there are some definite benefits in dosing VC and it is with your strong convictions (and Puffy's) that I am considering getting on board (I don't know about others, but trust me, I've spent way more than an hour reading this thread).

The reason why I was asking about tank ages, is because the reef I have at the moment is less than 6 months old and I wondered if anyone had documented effects of VC dosing early on in a reef system.

Anyone have/had that situation?

Thanks again Puffy and Jeff for your many contributions here on this topic. Your experience and time committed to this topic is appreciated. :)

Mine was setup about a year or so before the VC. And i cut the normal dose in half being that its only a 10gal...didn't want to shock things.

I'm probably most impressed, and concerend with my PPEs. Before VC one polyp would open then the next day a different one while the others stayed closed. Now out of 3 polyps i have 2 opening daily and the other half opening.

My small LPS Micro seems to love the stuff and is overgrowing the frag disc its attached to and my other acan is hit or miss. Sometimes it looks good and normal and sometimes it looks ****ed off.

Thank you all for pushing the envelope. I've subscribed to this thread and read it daily for weeks now. Its extremely important to continue to push boundaries of good husbandry.

Skepticism is important too, obviously, so we don't have "Marc Weiss Magical Mystery Tonic Elixirs Of Fantastical Fortitude" being sold to us, but hobbyists looking to improve coral health perform a vital service for these animals.

Keep up the good work.

Ok, ordered two 16oz bottles of the recommended brand from iherb today that should be here the first of next week. I will take some before pics over the weekend prior to dosing.

Looking forward to seeing any before and after pics from others trying this experiment.

What would you guys recommend I try for a softies/LPS 60G total volume system?

Is the best way to just buy a tablet and place it in a high flow area or a liquid form?

Thanks!

Thanks Pufferpunk!

I also have a Rose and other LPS such as Frogspawn and Elegance so do you think it will have any negative effects on those? I'll be honest that I didn't read through all the pages of this and the other truncated thread :)

Thanks!

The only coral i can see that has suffered after i dosed VC was an Acan i have. Everything else in the tank even some Micromussa....could be something else bothering the Acan. I can't see it having a negative effect on those 2 LPS but i can't say 100% as i don't have those types.

Great idea to post the survey Montanabay...your summary questions are the types of things I was wondering as well and would love to see the results (so keep updated on the results as they go along). Maybe another question you may want to ask is if
the aquarist why they are seeking to dose VC, (i.e for treatment purposes or for general color and growth supplementation). Just a thought.

I will join the survey next week when I begin supplementation of VC. I am working on my before pics as we speak.

Thanks again

I have frogspawn that has grown to show size, acans that have trippled in size & an RBTA that is showing bubble tips for the 1st time in 4 years.

I have noticed that my zoa's sulk and dont look happy, instead of the extended polyps after dosing vit c & debating whether to stop dosing.
