Treating with Vitamin C

:D

I'm pretty stunned by it actually, I am sure you are not surprised at all!

What the heck is it pulling out, anyways!!!

Nitrates have always tested very low. Truthfully I have not tested in months, if my sps look really happy I do not bother. I do not even own an accurate nitrate test kit (I used one I picked up for free, its one of those all in one cheap-o test kits). I do not have a phosphate test kit.

I think the issue has been stuff leeching out of the rock in my tank. I used dry rock from BRS but did not really "cook" it.

This tank has been running for around 5 months. I keep mostly sps and I have had awesome growth, color, and polyp extension but small annoying algae issues.

So for the most part things have been great. I figured why not see if I can make it better by dosing vitamin c? I have noticed significant changes in my zoas and color in some of my sps!

Here is the table I'm planning on using, does my math look correct to everyone? How is everyone measuring these random fractions of a tsp? Smaller dosing spoons? I'm waiting for my VC to get here, once it does I'm going to measure these out by weight and post that as well.

1/4 tsp=1112 mg.

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ---- 1892 mg VC ---- 0.43 tsp
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC ---- 0.85 tsp
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC ---- 1.28 tsp
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC ---- 1.70 tsp
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC ---- 2.13 tsp
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC ---- 2.55 tsp
Dose 2x/day.

For every 85 gallons:

5 ppm ---- 1608 mg VC ---- 0.36 tsp
10 ppm ---- 3217 mg VC ---- 0.72 tsp
15 ppm ---- 4825 mg VC ---- 1.08 tsp
20 ppm ---- 6435 mg VC ---- 1.45 tsp
25 ppm ---- 8043 mg VC ---- 1.81 tsp
30 ppm ---- 9652 mg VC ---- 2.17 tsp
Dose 2x/Day

Are you folks feeding more liberally while dosing vitamin c? My skimmer is pulling out so much gunk I feel I can treat my tank to some more food. This is usually in the form of spot feeding corals (some acans, duncan, and dendro, palys, etc). Much of this food the fish steal or it gets blown around (or simply not caught by my critters).

i have noticed the increase in skimming really takes effect when you get to the 10-15ppm dosage. jmo but have otherrs seen this at this particular level? Also whats the end call on water clearity, it appears more clear, what is the end effect of light refraction with the increased clearity?

Would not skimming at all be detrimental when adding VC? My skimmer crapped out on me last July or so, and I just haven't bothered to rebuild/replace it yet.

i just recieved my bottle of VC today and im wondering do i just drop 1/4 tsp in my water?!?! i have a jbj 12 gallon nano.

no i mean do i need to mix it with water then pour in the tank or i can just pour it in my tank water as it is. sorry im pretty new

Oh boy! Go to work for a few hours & look at all the new Qs!

as far as feeding, I always feed heavily. Turn off all flow, use a turkey baster & feed every single polyp & mouth in your tank. that includes all your LPS too. Inleave the flow off for an hour or 2 & them leave the skimmer off for the night. No reason to "feed" my skimmer.

For fractions of a tsp: The Salifert spoons are 1/5 of 1/4 tsp, if that helps any, bbut I always just rouond to the nearest 1/4 tsp, for ease of dosing.

VC=lowered nitrate=increased clarity=healthy, more colorful corals.

IMO, I'd never go w/o a skimmer. If you don't have a skimmer or sump, dilute the VC in a cup of tank water & pour into flow.

I hope I covered everything...

Also whats the end call on water clearity, it appears more clear, what is the end effect of light refraction with the increased clearity?
Why does this happen (scientificly) and how much happeneds? if you increase dosage does it have a linear trend on clearity??

been a while since I was on this everlasting thread! Anyhoo, I had a mild outbreak of the pox about 10 days ago and I started in at 40-50 ppm of C and today it is gone. I did nothing other than dose, no WC, or Furan dipping. I started high and I would not recommend that, but I am happy with the results. I will continue with a much smaller amount of routine dosing.
With the amount of polyps I have individual dipping is very difficult
It might be that the stars were aligned...but the C worked. Give it a whirl IMHO
good luck and happy reefing.
PL

Did the same against pox on my Purple Hornets (I know how you love names :p) & I wasn't about to lose those babies! Glad to hear others are having the same results! :D

Well to back up Geo's claim. A fellow reefer gave me a bunch of polyps to restart my collection. 1 of the large frags had a bunch of polyps infected by POX. Lets just say after loosing my polyps, I got lazy wanting to deal with it.

I said the heck with it and just dose higher amounts of VitaC. I did dose for a week. Most of the pox is pretty much gone, pretty much a polyp or 2 has a pox left.

What ppm ate you at? I also jumped high quickly with no adbverse affects but with so many folks complaining about cloudy tanks, brown slime, etc., I'm just telling them all to go slow.

i dose at 12-15 ppm and have good results with no side effects at this time. I have documented evrey day since X-mas and have documented everything from h20 changes to vit.c increases..ect. I even stopped for a week and recorded the increase in nitrates after the stop. from what i can tell this works.

Just an idea but has anyone attempted to create a vit. c solution that you would 'dip' badly effect zoo's in? jmo but may be another route to help with bad pox outbreaks.

Wasn't sure if I should post this here or make a new thread but anyone dosing Vit-C with a cyphastrea in their tank? Everything else in my tank looks great (I've been dosing for 5 weeks) but my Meteor Shower base has turned from blue/teal to beige?

I got a 3" Meteor shower. No issues, polyps actually extend more.

Puff, does the VitaC increase the KH a lot?

I have a green cyphastrea in my tank, a large colony. So far no adverse effects. I am dosing around 5ppm

These corals like low light and high flow.
