Treating Wrasses

Grizzled & Cynical
I have been generally pretty successful at getting most of my fish through QT/treatment, except for wrasses. Lost a flasher in CP, and another crapped out when I used NGP. Now I don't even treat them, just observe for 8-12 weeks. But what if ich presents .....

Curious to hear from those more wrasse experienced than I - what is your treatment protocol for these fish? Thanks in advance!

The CP thread contains some anecdotal accounts of wrasses not surviving treatment, so there must be something to it. Last couple of wrasses I QT'd via Coppersafe (Melanurus) and TT (Sixline). Both did fine, but being most wrasses are relatively small I think TT is the way to go with them.

I had some trouble lately with wrasses myself but I think mostly due to poor specimens. I lost 2 dd carpenters that looked sickly skinny when I got them, not at all like their picture & I couldn't get them to eat, & I have a large arsenal of foods in my house. Then one of the replacements line spot flashers died for no good reason eating like a pig& fat. Other made it through qt only to jump a couple weeks later despite my full canopy... screw flashers.

I have had no issues with using cupramine on wrasses though. Have not had enough nuts to try that on leopards though. I only watched& hit those with prazi. I would add metro though if I do any others.

I dont like TT for wrasses though due to the sand issue, & they can sometimes be reluctant eaters.

On another note, where are you getting your wrasses? La/dd and bluezoo have been having a **** poor selection lately. I just tried r2g for 2 common ones that I just have not seen anywhere else, hoping I get the right ones this time.

Agree with Humblefish. I lost a Solarensis using CP. They also don't like Prazi. As long as you use the recommended dosage they are ok but you have to use a lot of aeration. I've done TT and just put a plastic container with new sand in the new tank. I actually use the black plastic container you get from Olive Garden...works great.

Combination of LA and LFS. Flasher from LA looked great, was eating but then just stopped once I added CP and I could not get it back. Flasher from LFS was ok initially but quickly went downhill in QT in NGP.

I have a small reef tank that currently houses a naoki wrasse who appears the picture of health and a black leopard. No meds so far, but the black leopard is not eating as has some whitish spots on him, so we'll see.

I've also lost a few flashers with CP, so I won't be using it with them any longer. I plan to treat proactively with Prazi and then observe for 8 weeks or so. If they show spots, I'll treat with Cupramine.

BTW, what is NGP?

The black leopards are sooooo much prettier in person than in pictures its ridiculous. I tried only one but he had the white poo from the first day. I hit with 3 doses of prazi and it did nothing. That was before I found metro or I'm confident I would still have her.

Let me know how the intro goes with your more established leopard(s?) I have been eyeing those black leopard trios on DD but I'm afraid my guys won't take em. Well my larger meleagris anyway, I think is beginning the transition to male.

I will, though am a long way from moving her into the DT. Still not eating any of the foods I am offering, though she does pick constantly at the live rock. I had no trouble introducing my female meleagris into the DT, yet more recent male bipartitus, while ignored in the acclimation box, is getting a pretty rough go of it from my hippo - go figure!

That sucks, they are tough. I think that's why people say they have better results with 3 or more at a time. One eats, the rest follow. Good luck
