Trigger ripping silicone/cords

I'm thinking about setting up a trigger species tank, but have a few reservations. Lately I've been reading a lot about triggers and came across a few accounts of them ripping the silicone off the glass, chewing power cords, and throwing rocks into the glass.

Obviously these are huge downsides but I wonder how common they are. The most difficult I'd say is probably the silicone.

Who has experienced this? Do you think it's common? Are there certain triggers that are more likely to do this than others?

Thanks

Never had any problems with the triggers I have kept, but when you are talking about huge queens, or clown triggers it is a different story.

What are you planning on keeping?

I had a pinktail who was surprisingly agressive. He would keep my bluejaw in a cave and my puffer hunkered in a corner....i got rid of him and both are now happily swimming.

I have never had any problems with trigger (or puffers for that matter) with any chewing on cords or any silicon...only rock work and blowing sand around looking for scraps.

I wonder if the triggers that were ripping up silicone and power cords were just overly board and went into a destructive phase.

I saw a 14 queen trigger try and eat its way out of a 150 gallon...did a nice job too...looked like someone took a hammer and chisel to the tank...she ate anything that was in the tank...heaters, powerheads etc...the tank was destroyed...owner went away for the weekend...did not have anyone feeding the trigger...she got hungry and restless...

Wow. That's crazy....
Do you guys think an acrylic tank would be safer? Im sure it would get scratched up but at least there wouldn't be danger of the tank leaking...

lol, that was an acrylic tank...glass is best for beast sized trigs...having said that, my new tank is acrylic...will try and keep my trigs as well fed as always...

yeah, that would be very bad...hope the tank will be big enough to prevent them from getting bored and eating the acrylic...

I've seen lots of clowns, queens, and bluelines do that. Undulated to occasionally, as do the periodic Rhinecanthus triggers, but not as commonly. Much less common with nigers and Xanthichthys triggers.

Never had issues like that with the huma I had for 5+ years. He did keep himself pretty occupied though, he broke off a piece of live rock about the size of a superball and would pick it up and carry it around, swimming nose down. He kept that piece around for 3+ years. His other hobby was sucking up gravel and spitting it at the snowflake eel that he shared the tank with.

Unfortunately I had to give him up when I pulled the tank down, had to move for work reasons. Got him from a LFS when he was maybe an inch big, tiniest one I've ever seen. Was about 7" when I had to get rid of him.

glass - triggers teeth will not scratch glass but a rock they throw around could crack it. If you get one with a crazy personality the silicone would be a concern.... but I doubt it

acrylic - much safer due to it not shattering if impacted. But scratching will happen.... so ****ed at my new harlequin tuck, he's put 20 or so scratches on my 10ft acrylic tank.... doesn't like seeing himself :(

If will not put a aggressive trigger in my tank, just picked up a sargassum & also have a hawian/black durgeon to go in the tank

Years ago I had a pinktail, he caused my 12+in Queen Angel to jump out of the tank twice in a single night..... That was 15 ish years ago..... usually the pinktails do not have that type of attitude.

I think you need to determine how big of a tank you can get. Then according to that determine what trigger to look at from there & also if you want other tankmates or just a single trigger

A local reseruant had a clown trigger in an acrylic tank by the bar. The bartender thought it was funny to tease the trigger and watch it destroy the tank. Management found out and realized the tank cost more than the bartender.

Bartender was fired.

IT literally chewed through the tank.

the pinktail I have now is insanely aggressive...you never know with trigs...had one for almost 10 years and was as kind and sweet as could be...this one is a terror...ugh...
