which one is the best to get ? I have only snails in my tank and wrasses and some anthias will they eat the fish or snails ?

Any species from the genus Xanthichthys are generally considered the most reef safe triggers. Which species is the most reef safe is open for debate. I don't think Xanthichthys are likely to eat your snails, they more often go after shrimp and don't usually bully other fish that are already established unless they get too large for the tank you put them in.

Im almost certain a clown trigger would eat just about anything you consider a clean up crew.
And then some small fish.

Pink Tail and Hawaiian Black are sometimes reef safe. They are not Xan triggers. I had a Hawaiian Black that was a really good reef citizen for over a year - but he was rather large and hurt the reef on the back end with how much food he consumed. Both of these will need quite a large tank.

I currently have a crosshatch that I would trust with fish, shrimp any inverts. Several have had issues with Xan triggers eating their chromis and damsels, but those cases appear to be more the exception than the rule.

Sargassum is a good choice as well.

Here is a good article on the Xan triggers:

I have had a female crosshatch for over 18 months now and she is a woderful fish in the reef. Never fights with my other fish and has never bothered the crabs, snailss or shrimp.

Great picture Bradley....I will say Bluethroat, Sargassum, and Crosshatch are the best bets, no guarantee even with them. Triggers are Triggers.

I have a blue throat that I just recently added. What a fish. Gets along with everything and doesn't even get near the inverts. Very sweet fish and very piggish. He LOVES his mysis shrimp, but thats about it. Colors are awesome, the only thing is that they hide a lot when first introduced. Good luck with your choice.

thanks guys for the advice i will keep the blue throat in mind would love a crosshatch but a little to much for me but a beautiful fish anyway

Crosshatches are very expensive. I have had the best luck with a Niger Trigger, best fish I have ever owned. Just like a dog he ate out of my hand and even begged for food! They are jumpers though that's how I lost mine couple years ago. My buddy now is Muray, my snowflake. Bought him when he was just a little baby (about 4-5 inches) now he is pushing a foot at least! He is trained to eat out of my hand.

IMHO - crosshatch triggers should not be in anything less than a 200g tank. Mine was in a 180 and seemed VERY cramped.

If you are going to go with a crosshatch, try to find one that is 5-6" or less (very tough to do so).

I loved my male crosshatch, but like any fish, the larger they are when they are introduced, they are harder to keep.

I would say for your 165 go with a Sargassum. They are great triggers and seldom seen. They are also beautiful and best bang for the buck.

Good luck
