Assuming the right tank - 180 gal mature tank with suitable tank mates, is it better to add 3 small females and allow one to change to male or start with 2 females and a male ?

Steve, do you recommend just a pair of females, keeping them singly or a group and then removing any extra males that may transition?

Singles work fine; pairs work with a male plus female. But if you keep a group, be sure to remove any transitionary male.

I can attest to the male/female working. I have 1 of each and so far so good. At first I did need to remove the male when I introduced the female. But once I put the male back in after 2 weeks all was good.
