Tripod, Best Bang for the $

I am looking for a light tripod, for my Canon 300D. My max price is $100 so I know that is going to limit quality.

I need something that is light and compact so I can take it on hikes, yet tall enough for someone 6'2" and rugged enough for the hikes.

That's a tall order, pun intended. I don't have any recommendations, but I can tell you my experience. Short story is I worked my way up to a Gitzo and wish I had just bought one in the first place. I also used a Manfrotto (Bogan?) 3021 I think before the Gitzo. I am tall too and I got sick of bending over all the time (but that Bogen was pretty tall, the prior ones not so much)! Read the sticky on tripods (I think there is one...) and seriosuly think about spending more upfront but only having to do it once.
