Tropycal play sand form Yardsright locally

I have been searching myself with no luck.

Check out the CTARS group forum, they found something similiar, but apparently the company that was providing the caribbean sand went under, so yard right is using mined stuff now.

Not sure if I'm accurate, but thats what it seemed.

I finally broke down and bought the carib sea from aquahut. $28 a bag!

I know, I'm already braking down and didn't even buy it yet.
My tank has crushed coral with a plenum, my water parameters are fine but every now and then theres a coral that gives up on life, so the only thing I can think of (and also what most people have been telling me) is take out the CC.
I'm going to need at least 7 bas of sand , hate to cough up another few 100 bucks just for sand.
Wal-Mart, last year had some nice stuff for $3 a bag , this year they have another brand but it specifically says on the bag not to use it in aquariums.

Sorry

but you may never find it, they, supposedly, are not saling it anymore. They lost their contact with the island they were getting it from, plus Yard right/Southdown/Old Cstle was bought by Cemex. And they have no plans on producing or selling Tropical Play Sand. So, it's gone. If you can find it, you're lucky. There is a sand that some are trying, it's Kolor Scpae, paver sand. Here's a link to it:

That is the stuff that walmart sells, is has a nice white color to it but as you see, on the bag it tells you not to use on aquariums:(

Southdown said not for aquarium use also, but that was because they had a separate distribution agreement with Coral-sea.

Apparently Kolor scape is aragonite, problem is nobody knows whether it has a phosphate issue, or if its bagged with equipment used for other chemicals or fertilizer there could be a contamination issue.

I was put off by that, but I only needede a bag or two. If I needed lots I might try to "cure" the sand and measure phosphates for a while before putting it in the tank.

Olemos, have you considered that you may have a predator in the tank?

Here's a scary/interesting thread.

Well, it is always a potability and with me, normally if something could go wrong... it will :(
Thanks for the link.

every bag of play sand says not to use for aquariums. they state it because they are not responsible if it messes up your system as its not what they make the sand for. home depot usually has some old castle.

IF you have a plenum and remove the CC , won't you have to break down the plenum also as you may be releasing alot of unwanted stuff into the water column. If you think the CC is giving you problems, Might be easier to drain what water you can from the tank and put the live rock and corals into a holding tank while you clean the tank with the plenum . Then add everything back plus some fresh saltwater and just go barebottom for now until you get the sand, unless you want to keep the plenum of course....

Yes I would remove every thing, don't want to just change the CC and find out a few months later that the plenum was the one messing things up.

I was at HD in COram today and they had some. I bought a dozen bags, probably 10 or so left.

'I will probably have some extra if it sells out.

Was out back in the plant area.

Last time I found Southdown at Home Depot, I bought a few extra bags, just in case. I made the mistake of storing them outside.
Let's just say that they would probably keep better if you store them in a place that's safe from the elements.

The slightest rip, cut or tear in the bag, and water starts getting in. That water is enough to promote algae. It all just looks dirty. I suppose that if I'm careful, I can recover most of it.
Now that you mention cat poop, I have several inconsiderate neighbors that allow their cats to roam (and decorate) the neighborhood. I wouldn't be surprised if cat claws are what made the rips and cuts in the bags.......

I put three bags in a new fuge I set up. It's working well.

Wasn't as fine as I remember SD being. HArdly clouded up at all. I have very low flow though.

I went to hd in coram yesterday and they have two pallets of kolorscape. I am pretty sure that it is not aragonite from the look of the sand. I passed on it. Looks like quartz - silica. It is pretty good sand - it is white and small grain and there are very many threads that say it is good to use.
