Trouble with Octo cone XP-2000 overflowing

I recently bought an octo xp-2000 cone to replace my 4 year old bubble magus skimmer. I set the top of the bubbles about 2 inches below the collection cup and the skimmer does its job, however out of no where the water level goes up about 4 inches and causes my collection bucket to overflow (i run a hose off of the cup into a 2 gallon container). I had to back the valve off all of the way to get the water level to drop back where it was. Look at it the next day and the water level is like 4 inches below where i had it set, crank the valve in to raise it, good for a few days, and then it overflows again.... Anyone else have this issue? I didn't sell my bubble magus yet, thinking of putting it back online and selling the octo. I hate having water on the floor in my fish room every few days, and the annoyance of having to adjust my skimmer all of the time, not to mention throwing my salinity off due to all of the make up water required.

A few questions that need answers:

1. How deep is the skimmer sitting in the sump?
2. Is the skimmer in a baffled area that is kept at a constant water level?

I have the Sro xp2000. It is very sensitive to water level in the sump. Is your water level rising for any reason? If not, it may be something going into the water such as food.

Mine used to be set off when I had the return pump and skimmer starting up together, say after a feeding. The skimmer has to start after the return pump has brought the water level back to normal.

It isn't the skimmer, but rather it is something to do with the water level or something going into the tank.

Also they require a break in period.....you should leave the gate wide open for the first 2-3 weeks then slowly tune it to your desired preference...1/4 turn wait and hour....etc should settle in after that.

I agree. I had the same problem when I first set up my xp5000 ext... after running it open for a couple of weeks it finally settled down and skims great without any further adjustments.

Give it some time its still breaking in.

My brother has an sro 1000 and had problems with it overflowing. It was due to water level skimmer was in and where he had the water level in skimmer set at.

I run an xp-3000 and have had overflows caused by some kinds of foods, especially anything gel-based. Unwashed PE Mysis is the perfect antidote. It will completely kill foam. Epoxy will cause overflows. Adding fresh RO water close to the pump intake also causes it to freak. I find this skimmer very prone to overflows, mostly traceable, althoygh there have been a few I can't explain..

i sold it. the water level in my sump is consistent, i use a float valve that keeps it right where it needs to be, but other than that the skimmer is in a section that can't change water level. I have no problem with feedings killing my foam head, however, feeding that causes it to overflow just doesn't work for me. Put the bubble magus back online.

The reef octopus skimmers are extremely good skimmers. If you had your water level set and it didn't vary more than 1/8" or so, either the gate valve needed opened up some, OR you had that much crap in the water that this skimmer was getting out that the old skimmer was not. If you search this forum, you will find MANY people who complain about this exact issue and after they remove the skimmate that the skimmer is trying to remove, the water settles down and it behaves normally. A lot of people just allow the skimmer cup to drain back into the tank during break-in which means that all of the garbage that the skimmer is pulling out goes directly back into the tank only to keep the skimmer overflowing forever. I would wager that if you had let the skimmer remove the contaminants that it was pulling out it would be fine. The last thread like this I read, I think the guy ended up taking out 3 gallons of skimmate before it settled down. Sorry to hear you sold it.
