Trouble with WLAN

I am having some trouble accesing my WLAN card from my laptop which is connected via Wireless to the Router. I have followed every step to the word and I still cannot get access to the GHL WLAN card.

I did the following after installing the card:

I setup the WLAN via the controller and followed the directions very closely, but something else showed up on the Profilux screen that the tutorial showed. After selecting 9600 baud, the option "IP of WLAN" did not show up, my only options were, no action, IP address, and Defaults WLAN. I selected IP adress, then "Obtain IP Auto?" showed up and I selected no because the tutorial said that I would have to create my own IP address for the controller, so I created one. I was then asked, "Ad-Hoc connect?" I had no idea what option would be better so, I just picked no.

I would like to use the controller to access it through my wireless computer and to have access to the controller where ever I may be if I am not home. Should I have selected "Yes" for the Ad-Hoc connect?

Anyways, since I selected no, I went on to set the SSID for my router on the Profilux, after that I saved my settings.

The next thing I did was attempt to connect to the WLAN using the IP address I created, but no luck there. Is there something else that I am suppose to do, but did not? Maybe I am suppose to assign the created IP address to the router?

Thanks

what IP have you assigned to the profiLux? And what is your pc IP?

WLAN is one are that I am not over great on and rely on matthias a lot but i know he is away today, so just helping with what knowledge I do have

(list of things I need to do - Learn WLAN and LOGIC!)

Tony please remove your phone number! I am sure you dont want your phone ringing all night!

I have given you all the info I have, Matthias will help further tomorrow

No worries, sorry i cant help more with the WLAN, maybe tonight one of the network gurus can help some more, other than that it will be over to matthias.

I apologies for being behind on this one subject, but its all down to getting the time to work on it

Set the ip to 192.168.1.10 and the mask to 255.255.255.0

It is necessary to set a IP that is in the same IP class from your IP mask (easiest way to determined this is to look at the configuration from computer/laptop)

There are 5 IP class that are defined (D and E are used differently):
A Class network mask: 255.0.0.0
B Class network mask: 255.255.0.0
C Class network mask: 255.255.255.0

Most home router is in the class C and is using a mask of 255.255.255.0. Problem is you have to get the first part of the IP used in the class. In other word if your router is handing out ip from the rage or 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255 using a mask of 255.255.255.0 you can go and assigned a ip of 192.168.10.XX as the “10” is out of what the mask can route. So without going in to much detail, Look at the configuration of you network connection on your PC, look at the IP of the gateway and add one, the rest of the IP should not change for example:
Router at home X
Computer 1
IP: 192.168.0.124
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Computer 2
IP: 192.168.0.129
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

So in this case it would be safe to assign this to the Profilux controller:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Here is a second example:
Router at home Y
Computer 1
IP: 192.168.24.12
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.24.1

Computer 2
IP: 192.168.24.13
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.24.1

So in this case it would be safe to assign this to the Profilux controller:

IP: 192.168.24.8
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.24.1

I prefer to use the IP that would follow the gateway as I haven’t seen a router that assign ip’s in the xx.xx.xx.2 to xx.xx.xx.100 range thought DHCP (the mechanist used to assign an ip automatically to a client). Assigning a IP that is assigned already or that could be assign will break the communication for both device and the devices will not be reachable.

HTH :c)

When I get back home I will see if I can make a small application to detect the network configuration and propose a ip for the user.

One thing I should also mention is it is better to leave the Profilux as "Obtain IP address automatically on DHCP" and to create a lease reservation on your router for the ip that was assigned to the device. This applies to both the lan and wlan module.

Wow, Christian that's a lot of info. I'll try that out in a few minutes. By "Obtain IP address automatically on DHCP" does that mean that I should chose "yes" on the controller?

FWIW, I am using a 2wire 511 router and I have no been able to find anything in it's settings that would let me add an additional gateway, unless there is a way to add a gateway on the PC instead of the router.

Sorry, I lack the knowledge for this kind of networking stuff. :(

I just uploaded 2 images of the selected setting that should be set on the Profilux and on the Lantronic. I have also highlighted the location of the MAC address that would be used for the lease creation. (Remember that this is the MAC address of my Profilux and that you have to use the value of yours in order to make this work :c)

You dont add a gateway but use the value that is already set. this value comes from your router.

Hi everyone, I plan to call my ISP and ask them how I can add an entry to my router for the Profilux's IP address. My DHCP looks like it's off and I am not sure what steps to take once I enable it.

Tony Romano: My device is hard wired (Lan mod.)

I use a combinaison of WPA2/IPSEC/SSH on my home network and this is one of the reason I opted for a wired device.

ReefRockerLive: Make sure you ask on how to create a lease reservation also... this is very important ast the ip of the device will be changing every time the lease expiration time will have expired. (This is usualy 24Hrs)

Alright, I called my ISP and they want to charge me for that service and that's ridiculous! They couldn't tell me how to create the lease reservation either, unless I agree to be charged.

I did find the IP address for the WLAN and DHCP is enabled, but I don't know what to put into the address bar for my browser so I can access the Lantronix WLAN settings.

If anyone is willing to walk me through this over the phone, please PM me.
