Troy's 270 Gallon plus Fishroom

I'll post updated pictures soon. I'm a bit reluctant because when I look at pictures from a year ago it makes the tank look terrible today.

I did do another project today. I installed an auto feeder from apex! Loved my old feeder, but like the apex one even more!

That is a good report so far. Any new pictures?

How are we ever to move forward with out looking at the past?

While I understand, my 120, pre 180 day, looked good to me when I spun the 180 up... but now.. I am like, wow.. I had that??

I did a double take on some pictures earlier, then I looked and saw the 'quoted' part, they were mine.. LOL

Here is an updated movie.... using my new Go-Pro 3.... I love being able to get under the water with the fish!

You'll notice in the video a shot of my new "I don't eat aiptasia" Filefish! Darn guy eats everything I feed him... doesn't seem to touch any coral.... but isn't eating my aiptasia either!

Nice vid.

For the filefish, maybe if you quarantined it with some aptasia rock ahead of time you might get it eating the stuff, or at least know that it was averse to aptasia before putting it in the display tank.

Good suggestion... unfortunately a little late :)

Not a lot to report other than I've been working hard to get the tanks parameters all back in line... they are:

PH 7.7 to 7.9
ALK 8.1
Calc 500
Mag 1440
Am. 0
Nitrate 105
Nitrite 0
Sal 1.025
Temp 77 to 78

As you can see I have a small Nitrate problem but everything else is more or less ok.

I did add 5 Blue Chromis, 9 Green Chromis, A Flame Hawkfish (pic below) and in the frag tank a Lawn Mower Blenny. We also got a really cool fairy wrasse but he unfortunately didn't make it out of the QT tank...

Nitrate problem

So... as part of getting my tank back in shape i'm fighting a serious Nitrate problem. My other readings (ammonia, nitrite, phosphate) are all at 0.0.... but my Nitrate's are over 100 (100 to 110). I've been doing regular water changes but its not making much, if any, impact. I through some Algone bags into the sump today just because I have them...

What are everyone's thoughts on the best way to address this. Pretty much any SPS I put into the tank die within 48 hours so I'm at my wits end...

What is making it?

What are all of your test results?
Also test your water.

Are you dosing anything?

Light cycle? Light type?

1) Don't know... I don't have any major die-off's or anything. I have a refugium with cheoto growing great; deep sand bed.

2) Yes.... Ammonium 0.0, Nitrite 0.0, Nitrate 100-110, Calcium 475, Alkalinity 9.0, PH 7.7 to 8.0, Temp 77 to 78 deg, Phosphate 0.0

3) Yes.. BRS two part keeping my Alk and Calcium where they are

4) Light cycle... 6 Radion LEDs... 12-hour cycle... starting slow and ramp to a peak of 70% for a few hours then back down. There is an LED over the fugue and an ATI light fixture over the Frag tank (10 hr cycle, 8 hrs full 10 hrs 1/2 of the lights)

I didn't read back but do you have a good quality GAC in a reactor going? I would change this out and keep refreshing it until the NO3 goes down. Do you have anything in your sump like bioballs or ceramics that are known to cause huge increases in NO3? Also, a DSB that is not getting enough oxygen can cause NO3 to rise.
