True Percula "Experts", Please Stand Up!

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping that someone with more knowledge, about True Percs, than me could find this post.

I onced purchased a "Sri Lankan" True Percula from a lsf some 6 years ago for $35/ea while the going rate for a regular True Perc was about $14.

This so called "Sri Lankan" Percs had better coloration (brighter, more saturated orange) than the other percs in the lfs.

I'm looking for more info on these Sri Lankan type for purchase. But I'm finding out that there are no True Percs that are native to Sri Lanka.

If someone has any information about my misinformation, please reply. Your response will truly be appreciated.

Hello there I spoke to you today at Sea Splendor...I couldn't help but wonder when I saw the thread if it was you...

Anywho there are no Sri Lankan Perculas that I or anyone I have spoken to are aware of. I am fairly confident that what you have/had was a Sl. Islands perc...

Furthermore, as I showed you the fish like everything else look much better under metal halides than under PCs...much less ones suspended 2 feet over the tank with old bulbs...

As most people will tell you any fish will look much better after a few months of good feeding and good water in your reef tank...

Also as a final note, individual fish look different. It is very possible that the fish you had were exceptionally bright perculas from a particular location a.k.a particular gene pool....

Keep in mind that clownfish larvae have a relatively short planktonic period making their geographical expansion a slow process creating ideal situations for localization of species...

What colby said sounds about right. They were probably from the Solomon Islands.
There are no percula clowns in the Indian Ocean, much less Sri Lanka.

Lighting will make a difference, as will the health of the clown. There are a couple LFS in my area that use VHO fluorescents with a spectrum that really makes the orange pop out in percula and ocellaris clowns.

If you look around, I'm sure you will find something similar.

I didn't expect to see you here.

I researched some Sri Lankan wholesaler's list and no True Percs were there. I guess this is because they don't have them.

I guess that I'm still in denial that Aqua Life (in Rocklin) mislabeled their perculas. But I'm glad that I now know why I could not find them.

I think you're correct about the origin of those percs that I had- Solomon Is. They did looked more saturated-color wise than the other one. However, the ones that I had for 2 years were a bit more saturated- but this could be due to, like you've said, a particular gene pool.

Anyways, it was nice talking to you. I'm still using the very first tank that I got from you guys some 12 years ago.

If your looking for the darker orange, I would not get SI percs, most of the percs from that local are pretty light orange. PNG percs have an all around brighter color to them.

I second rods onyx though! You cant beat them.

What is this?

To all the experts,

A big hello to the Reefcentral community from a new member.

Several months ago I noticed a small pin-head size dark spot near the stomach of my Percula. I didn't think too much of it, but within the last week it seems to have gotten slightly larger.

It looks like something is slowly breaking out of the skin. The fish is behaving normal, but I am getting concern. I've had the fish for over two years. I'm thinking of bringing the fish to my LFS for examination.

I think color has just as much to do with diet as it does for the area they clowns are from.

not that my maroons arent cool they just act like a tru perc especially a tank raised perc
