Trying to catch more detritus and I have a closed-loop.

Return inlet has to be near the surface otherwise in case the check valve fails, when the return pump stops, the whole tank might be back-siphoned to the sump. And when the return inlet is up there, a lot of heavy detritus don't get a change to get sucked away before they settle down at the bottom corner somewhere no matter how strong I run my powerheads.
When I drilled holes for return lines, I also drilled holes for closed-loop and use a submersible pump to pump the water thru. And now I have an idea. Why not run a canister filter instead of the pump and catch more free floating detritus. I know I have to change / clean the filter but maybe that makes the tank more nitrate free.

What do you think? I wonder it is not a common implementation.

have you tried moving your powerheads to different places to keep everything floating around?

Yes, and the soft corals don't like the full blast constantly. I also have my 2 WAV pumps running 100% for 10 mins a day just to stir up all the detritus. Most detritus just don't get a chance before sinking back down.
