Is there a trick to focusing? I know on my old Canon Ftb there is something in the middle of the lens that a person could tell when it was in focus. I have not found such a feature on the G5. Is there some focusing tool I could use?
Pushed half-way down I get a green box when in focus and frame has enough light, otherwise it is orange. On manual focus I just have a distance meter on the right side of viewfinder so I have to guess at my distance.
The problem comes in shooting a fish which is always moving.
Manually focusing on a moving target is difficult. I suggest observing the fish's swimming behavior. You'll probably notice areas where it tends to either hang out or change direction. Set your focus for those areas and when the fish is in position, take the picture.
So in order to focus on a spot where the fish "will be". I am assuming I focus on the rock behind the fish and then physically move the camera out a little. If that is right I am not very good at it. The rock always seems to be in focus and the fish not in focus.
I was showing my brother how to use my old G2 and found out that in Manual Macro mode I could get as close as 2" away from subject and still be in focus. Now I have to see if the G5 will do the same thing.
I am so exasperated. I take 40 shots and still cannot get what I want in focus. Is it possible that the camera is focusing on the glass and not what is inside? I have depressed the button halfway to lock in a focus point and then I have to move towards and away from the subject to try to get the fish in focus.
My other problem is getting enough light to get the DOF I want. For a full tank shot I would like the whole depth of the tank in focus. I have to slow the shutter down to 1/20 to get enough light. I do have a tripod but do not have a remote trigger. (Well I do have something in the box that uses a battery I assume it might be a remote.)
I really do not know how people get in focus shots of fish. There must be an art to it. At the 1/20 shutter speed I cannot take an in focus of a moving fish.
Just blowing off steam here. I will keep trying until I get it.
At 1/20th, it isnt that you arent in focus... you're probably focused just fine. You're dealing with motion blur at a slow shutter speed. The fish is in focus but it moves 1/8th of an inch during the 1/20th of a second so you've got a blurry picture.
+1 for 1/20th being too slow to get a sharp pic while handholding with a moving subject. For handholding 1/30-1/60th is about the limit for most people and for moving subjects 1/100th, just as some general guidelines.
Well, I have finally learned that I have to turn the program knob on the top to set each parameter individually for aperture and shutter speed. I had the AF assisst beam in the menu turned off. I was shooting with a UV filter and a hood on the lens which I think blocked the focusing beam. And now I have started shooting at ISO=400.
Most shots are much better now but I still have trouble with getting tiny subjects focused. I was going to use my laptop to help me focus but the A/V output on my camera is damaged. I may try to get it fixed.
Oh and I also got a new battery and finally learned how the remote works.
Turns out that the Audio/Visual port is bad and does not work correctly. When I took it somewhere the repair guy said the macro focus CPU sounds like it is bad also.
I was getting some shots at 1/160 and F 5.0 with ISO =400 but I cannot get those tiny objects so I will have to send the camera in to Canon to be fixed.
It will be a heck of a thing to find out all this time it was the camera and not me.
