Trying to pick a vacation shop. Anyone been to Sanibel?

We have three free flights from southwest and now they go to Ft Meyers, so we are looking at Sanibel Island. We can get a condo for about $850 a week so it would be a pretty cheap trip.

Opinions on where to stay or best shelling beaches would be appreciated

Sanibel and Captiva are very nice. You should be able to find a cheaper condo on Ft Meyers Beach and make a day trip or two to Sanibel as well.

Stayed on Sanibel several years ago, Pointe Santo de Sanibel if it's still called that. And talk about shells, the beach was nothing but shells, kind of rough on the feet. Was a nice stay, but I'm preferential to the calmer, clearer waters and soft white beaches of Destin.

We have done Destin, but my 7 yr old is dying to find shells, so I thought what place could be better?

You could always drive up a bit further north and go to the barrier islands (Casey Key, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key). Siesta Key was voted best beach in the US on the Travel Channel. The sand is like Talcum powder. Lido Key has the best shells i've ever seen! Longboat is an awsome place to stay because it's all resorts, houses, and golf courses....none of the junk stores, etc.
