Tswifty8 hates Koralias...

Hey T I read in a thread on the "new to hobby" forum that you hate them and no longer use the K's. I have one that does an ok job I guess but I wouldnt mind finding something better. I would like an mp40 but $400 just in the tank budget at the moment.

So why dont you like them and what did you change over to? I'm sure there is probably a thread here that would answer that for me but I cant search right now.

I will say that mine has never broken or anything, but the giant now purple football does visually take away from the tank.

Thanks.

Haha...

I can't stand them. I think their flow is extremely lacking in many ways. Now take into consideration... I run SPS dominant tanks.

I had 3 - #3's in my 90 and they weren't cutting it. The flow pattern is too dispersed and literally dies like 4" in front of the unit. I coudn't even feel flow in the middle of the tank. The current just blows out from every angle and really doesn't go anywhere.

I just hate seeing posts where people think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread (because of their cost)... when they really aren't a large step above a jet stream powerhead IMO. Luckily I never had any stray current, but they are notorious for leaking stray voltage into the tank, and IMO their build quality is lacking as well. Also they seem to have about a 1yr life on them. I haven't seen too many people that have had pumps for over a year without some type of issue or needing to replace them.

Tunze on the other hand, has great build quality and I've heard of guys having their pumps for 5yrs plus without problems. I mean that speaks for itself. They are a bit more pricey. However, the non-controllable units seem to be dropping in price.

It's just one of those things "I" have a very strong opinion on. I'm certainly not going to flame anyone for using them or lock myself to a telephone pole outside the factory until they stop making them... but when asked my "opinion" I will never recommend them. It's like skimmers, or really any piece of equipment, you never really know how good or bad yours was until you purchase a new one.

I was using a Tunze 6025 before I switched to the VorTech MP40.

For a pump on a budget, I personally like the Modded Maxi Jets... those things are great little pumps, and will run forever.

Don't even have to mod them....cut back the nozzle on a normal one almost to the point where is meets the round housing...and drill 3 equally spaced 1/8" holes in the housing....then pop it back on the pump....and the increased flow will blow you away...

I run a 6025 and a korallia 1 in my 40 long. I got the 6025 used for 40 bucks and it kills the korallia. However before i got the 6025 i was quite pleased with the korallia. I think the #3 was recalled a while back too. The modded maxi's seem nice but with the Pump +Mod+magnetic holder ur looking around 50-60 bucks. Might as well buy a tunze.

Koralia are junk !!!! I have one that is only a week old and burnt to a crisp still in box not worth the gas money to salty to return for a new one !!!

Got a pic of the drilled holes you're talking about?

I did the DIY mod and didn't like it. After a couple months the pump started to vibrate I cleaned and still vibrated. On top of it you never can air the flow because it changes at times.

I own 2 koralia 2s and like them alot. I ran them in my 30 L for a year, however, I just upgraded to a 40 gal and they're just not enough. I need to add more flow. I had a k 3 for about 2 months in my 30. but it was too strong and blew my sand everywhere. No matter how I aimed it.

I have heard bad things about them, but honestly I have owned them for a year and like them. Keep in mind though I have never owned vortek or tunzes so I can't compare the koralias to them.

Also they have wonderful customer service. My ceramic shaft broke in one. I emailed them and they sent me two brand new shafts and 1 new magnet impellar no questions asked.

I am a true Tunze fan. However for the money, the aftermarket MJ kits are worth it unless you need them to be controllable, etc. All and all it might cost you $50-60. However, I look at MJ's almost as disposable pumps. If you ever have an issue, you can swap out the pump body for cheap and are back up and running.

The MJ mods with the shroud are great, but they're way to strong for smaller tanks. I tried on with the small prop on a MJ1200 and it was just right for my 55 but wouldn't work in anything smaller.

I have two koralia #4 in my 75. I had a problem with one after about a year with current leak. Sent it back HydorUSA and they sent a new one back, no questions. I have been very pleased with the koralia since they have been in my tank. Nice broken-up flow and most of my sps grow without any problems. For the price, I'm not sure I would change. I have a 6025 and it work fine, just like my mod MJ900, but for flow and price, I'll stick with the koralias. JMO

I only drilled 3--- 1/8" holes in two of mine....one on each side and one in the back.....that's plenty flow.....too many or too big holes would cause it to vibrate....
