Tulsa Chloramine Information

For those of us that purify our own water (most of us probably do), what do we need to do to prepare for this change? Are there certian carbon blocks ect we need to install? Will this change affect how long the any of the filters last?

From what I have read you will need to change to a catalytic carbon from the standard.If you stick with the standard it will eat your RO membrane up pretty fast.I am not 100% sure on when the switch will happen but I know its soon.

Do you have any of the catalytic carbon from our club group buy for the Air Water and Ice setups? How much are they?

Yea you need to switch out your carbon block(s) to one specified for chloramines which unfortunately cost double the normal carbon blocks or run a catalytic activated carbon bed (granular carbon inside a cartridge vs a block). My understanding is the switch is starting any day or may have already started and will be complete before Fall is up. I wouldnt wait to get them switched to avoid membrane damage but a good store should have them both in stock.

I tried to call BA water dept just now to ask but no one who was there seem to know. I know Owasso uses Tulsa water so they will need to convert and Sand Springs has been on chloramines for a couple of years now.

BA has been on chloramines since December 2010, but only in trace amounts, i'm on BA water and still use the regular carbon blocks with no issues

Water out here in east BA sucks,I got through sediment filters alot.Tulsa water was a bunch better.

just keep an eye on the TDS coming out of the membrane. if it holds stable then the membrane is still good. as long as you keep your carbon blocks and sediment filters regularly changed (every 5 or 6 months) you wont have any problems.

The key to treating chloramines with carbon is contact time.

A good quality 0.5 mic/20,000 gal carbon block may be enough, or it may not be. Adding a second carbon stage is a good idea. You can go with a second standard carbon block, or a refillable cartridge with catalytic GAC (not regular GAC!).

You can expect to go through DI resin faster than you were when your tap water contained chlorine.

BA water Dept finally called me back and said they do not have or use any chloramines in their water and have no plans to change over till 2013 he also said they will be sending out notifications to all who use there water when they do make the switch.

Going by their website its possible they have already changed over. I think here on Peoria they may have already made the switch we had a strange odor for a few days in the shop that seem to come from the tap and I also noticed my TDS pre DI suddenly crept up quiker than normal. I'm not sure if this was the swirch or not but does match the description of what you might notice during the switch according to their website.

I noticed the same thing about a week ago. My TDS meter was reading consistantly around 167 ppm and last week started reading 194 ppm. Oh the joys! How do i know if my carbon is being exausted?

Just to update everyone my TDS is now coming out of the tap at 224 ppm. I still haven't switched out my carbon block so I'm getting a little nervous. Does the club still have our stock of catalytic carbon? If so, how much are they?
