Tunze 3162 - Rusted Magnet Assembly

Hi Roger,

I bought a Tunze 3162 a bout a month ago and I have been using it in my quarantine tank for three weeks. When I took the QT tank down I realized the magnet or magnet holder had rusted pretty badly; even leaving residue on the glass and thermometer nearby.

How do I go about getting a new unit or magnet assembly?

Below is a picture of the issue.

While it is not impossible it is rust, if you are using iron based phosphate remover it is a more likely explanation.

The magnets themselves are ceramic and cannot rust. They will however attract any iron particles which will rust. The two common scenarios are that the product was assembled where some iron particles were present, steel wool, iron filings, staples, etc and picked some up, or that an iron based phosphate remover was used and since this is essentially rust, it stuck to the magnet and caused a stain. If it wipes off with a scotch bright pad and minimal effort, this is the likely culprit.

The magnets rest on an iron plate which is coated with polyurethane, typically if this is what is rusting, you will see a small area where the rust is very intense and usually a pin hole in the black polyurethane between the magnets at that point. Since it looks fairly spread and even, I lean toward the first culprit.

Hi Roger,

I finally got a chance to clean the magnet assembly and it looks like there is a pinpoint hole in the coating between the magnets. Below is a picture of the hole. I would really appreciate a new magnet assembly. Please let me know what the next steps are.
