Tunze 6105 clicking/knocking noise lately

I have 2 Tunze 6105. About a month ago, 1 of them start making clicking/knocking noise. Then a week ago, the second one did the same thing. This clicking/knocking noise will only occur when I set up the intensity start from 0, which I really need to have a good wave.

I have done some research, and some thread mentioned from O-ring to rubber gasket by the impeller to even motor block. I have no clue.

Any suggestion or solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Roger,

I bought them from another reefer here. He said that you guys upgraded them and got them around December 2011.

Thank you for your help.

Do you know if they are the fixed shaft design that is not removable or the type with the shaft with blue bushings on either end that are removable? This change happened in Nov 2011 but through about Feb 2012 both designs were available, the fixed shaft style is the newer one and the shaft does not reach to the front cover unlike the removable shaft style.

I believe that they are the fixed shaft. I still have the boxes which come with instruction and a small paper saying "This is newer motor block" or something like that. But I will make sure and get back to you in a few minutes.

Unless the disk 3005.740 has worn out or was lost at some point, their is no reason for it to start clicking later on. Basically if it always clicked and the 3005.740 disk is intact and installed at the base of the shaft, a second 6065.792 disk stacked on it will solve this. If it is damaged or missing and did not click previously, a new 3005.740 should solve it.

Are you saying that 3005.740 should be at the base of the shaft if I dissembled the propeller? How do I know if it's worn out? And where do I purchase these 3005.740 or 6065.792 disks?

Oh, btw, are you guys going to be at ReefApalooza this weekend??

Is their any chance you can email me a picture of what you have or post it here? You can order and view these parts on Tunze.com.

We won't be at Reefapalooza this year but expect to be their next year. Marine Depot will have a lot of our products on display and we did contribute to the raffle.

I see the 3005.740 disk down in the pump, it is hard to say without removing it if the silicon cup is torn or worn in any way. Basically when the pump starts up, the electromagnetic field pulls the magnet down, the black plastic disk is a replaceable wearing surface that the magnet spins on and the slot is for water to enter for lubrication and cooling. The blue silicon cup is a shock absorber to take the hit of the magnet slapping the bottom. If this is damaged or compressed (likely the cause if it did NOT click in the past) then replacing it will solve it and a hook tool or small needlenose is the best way to slide it up the shaft and out. If it clicked from the beginning stacking a second plastic disk only (6065.792) as an additional shim, will solve the problem.

It just slides right back in, you will use the drive unit to push it down the shaft. They are a bit frustrating to get out because of some calcium build up. I would soak it in 50/50 vinegar and warm water for a few hours so it pulls out easier.

I tried to take the disks out, but no luck even soaking them for few hours. It seems like, I might have to break the disk to get them out. But i still need the powerhead at the moment, I guess....I am just gonna get new disks and test them out.

Cut and paste it in your browser, for whatever reason the hyperlink cut off part of the link. It is part 0220.707 on the tunze site, you could also find it that way.

Roger,

Thank you for the parts. I swap the 1st powerhead with 3005.740. The original blue part was damaged. However, I wasn't sure if because how I took it out. I basically had to yank it out. But it is working quietly now.

The 2nd powerhead was the same, but not sure if it's the same issue. Since I dont have 3005.740, I put the old blue part from the 1st and basically double it up. So basically it has 2 damaged blue part and 1 disk. It works fine now but not sure how long it will stay quite with the damaged blue part. I guess I will get 3005.740 to make sure.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
