Tunze 9002 noisy

I just replaced the skimmer that comes with the RSM 130 to a Tunze 9002 hoping it would be quieter.
The pump itself is very quiet, you can barley hear it. But the air intake makes lots of noise.
The pump is exactly at the marked water level.
The bubbles makes it way about halfway up in the cups pipe.
If I give the pump less air the noise almost disappears. But then the bubbles in the pipe also disappears...and that's no good i suppose?

The way it's now my old skimmer from Red Sea Max were much quieter. :(

Is it supposed to sound like that? Can I turn the air intake down and still get good skimmate?
It's brand new with a sticker on the box that says it's the new model with the new pump.
Perhaps there's some kind of mod that I can do to make the air intake noiseless?

Thanks in advance!

It is submerged too deep and water is entering the air intake making a noise. The marked water line should be considered the absolute maximum. Ideally the water level would be 2cm below this mark. I would raise the skimmer, unplug it, close the airscrew completely and plug it back in, after 30 seconds, open the airscrew slowly to about 3 full turns. This should purge most of the water from the airline but you will still have some noise for a few days.

I raised the skimmer two centimeter so the mark is now two centimeter above the water level. Closed the airscrew and gently opened it three full turns after 30 seconds. It's still very noisy. Hopefully it'll stop in a few days like you say it will.
How quiet is it supposed to be? I know the pump is very quiet but the air intake? I'm right now in another room and can clearly hear the suction from the skimmer. If i tighten the airscrew the noise disappears.

Thanks for the help Roger!

It is very quiet, the only reason there is noise is because water is inside the air intake, the only way to get it all out is to disassemble the skimmer and drain the air tube, in a few days the noise should be a lot less but if it is a big problem you can open the skimmer, remove the pump and drain the air hose and it should be solved.

No it's not a big problem...not if it stops in a few days. :)
And after a week or two the water inside the air tube will dry out by itself or do I need to disassemble it to get it all out even if I wait a few weeks?

Thanks!

It will dry out by itself, in a few days it should be better but it will take longer to be completely dry.

I think I'll wait instead because I'm pretty sure that I will fill the air hoses by mistake again when I put it back into the tank. :D

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it!

I opened the skimmer today, removed the air tube and drained it. I was making sure the skimmer didn't go under the watermark when putting it in the tank again. When I turned the skimmer back on the noise was the same as before. :(
Still this gurgling noise and sometimes clicking from the air intake. Very irritating and very loud!
Well well...all I have to do is wait I suppose.

Btw, does it matter if you use the original skimmer cup for it or if you use StevieTs cup?

I have never used the StevieT cup, however a lot of people do and I have not heard any complaints. I could imagine that if the neck of the cup was too wide or too close to the air intake on the back of the screw under the cup, that water could be sucked in this way. It may be worth testing with the factory cup to rule this out. You might also make sure the airline didn't disconnect from the air adjustment, if you take the top plate off the skimmer underneath should be a nipple from the air adjustment to the air hose, the air hose may have come disconnected. You could also try to raise it only 1cm more.

The noise is now gone. I replaced the air tube with a new one that is adjustable directly on the tube, drilled a hole in the top of the skimmer and put it through the hole. Now the skimmer is very quiet! :)

Thanks for all your help!

How about model 9010, is this 2 cm rule also applicable? Mine is also gurgling, closing the airline stops the noise but then there's no foam (pump alone is nearly silent). I've kept the skimmer quite exactly at the marked level. Now I raised it about 1,5 cm higher and did as suggested above - still gurgling, but we'll see after a couple of days how it went.

This doesn't apply to 9010, it is less sensitive. Make sure the pump is installed so the outlet nozzle is inside the clear jet pipe in the skimmer body. Also be sure the cup is properly seated, on the 9010 as long as the water level is not above the marked line it shouldn't make a noise. I will have no internet access the next couple days so please be patient. I will try to get back online one last time tonight and should be back again on Thursday.
