The Empire
I am really not getting any foam build up or skimmate. I am using an InTank skimmer cup from mediabaskets.com for the jbj nc 28. The water level is appropriate. Foam travels a little less than halfway up the neck of the collection cup and that's it. I have done the airline mod to my skimmer which has the air intake on max. I replaced the pump and still nothing. Any suggestions?

I am aware of this mod but you have to keep in mind that the only thing this mod can accomplish is

A) make it easier to adjust the air when you cannot reach the screw

B) a work around for a defective factory air adjustment which should just be reported and replaced under warranty

C) a bypass of a kink or bend in the line which should be fixed

In general, this mod will decrease air flow as the airline is longer and often smaller and more contorted.

Be sure that the skimmer is not submerged past the marked line, the ideal is the line is 1/4-1/2" above the water.

Make sure the airline is not kinked or pinched and not longer than needed, really not longer than the skimmer is tall.

Make sure the elbow that connects to the pump is not clogged by calcium or salt. If you bought the skimmer used or it is older, it would also be worthwhile to disassemble and clean the venturi nozzle with vinegar and water and a soft brush.

I'll try to see how it works without the airline mod. The waterline indicator on the body is no longer visible. Where would it normally be?

It is about 1/2" below the top of the lid. If you had the water roughly 3/4" from the flat part on the lid, it should be fine.

This is all I get...once in a while it foams over.

What is the large hose near the skimmer? If the flow by the skimmer is strong, this can negatively affect the performance, as will a change of water level that is more than 1/2" per day.

that is my carbon reactor return. the skimmer is in my center chamber of my nanocube right underneath the overflow which has quite a strong flow of water. this seems like it might be the cause of my issues. however i see many nanocube owners with the same setup. what do you suggest?

I would definitely try eliminating the strong flow by the skimmer, that almost always helps. Even as a short term test just installing the skimmer in the main tank in a low flow area would give a good idea if that was the cause. I cannot think of a technical culprit unless it was the pump or air intake being partially fouled but I assume this is a fairly new unit and it will usually take at least 4-6 months to get enough fouling by debris and calcium deposits to have any real impact.

the skimmer was purchased new however the pump is brand new

Have you tried reducing the water flow by the skimmer? I would also check the airline, especially the elbow that connects to the skimmer nozzle and it would be worthwhile to disassemble and clean the nozzle. Any pictures you could post of the nozzle and airline elbow would help in diagnosing this.
