Tunze 9004

Just wondering if any users using the 9004 need to close the air valve almost all the way in. The skimmer skims great just a bit to watery for me. I need to empty the collection cup every day. I feel like I am not using the full potential of the pump by have the air closed of all the way.
Perhaps Tunze could offer a taller collection cup in turn it would offer more holding capacity plus having a taller neck perhaps you could use more air which the pump can easily provide.

The tank size is 30 gallons.
Bio load 2 Damsels

Is the tank relatively new (less than a month old)? When you started the skimmer did you have the airvalve all the way open and then close it? You should be able to run much more air than that.

Thanks Roger

The tank is about 1 year old and today I had to close the valve all the way otherwise I will have to empty the cup everyday. I started with valve all the way open.

Do you use any additives besides calcium and mineral supplements? Have you tried adjusting the depth? In general it should be possible to leave it mostly open at most half closed.

No additives, as I only have xenia in there. water changes with basic salt mix IO.
i tried to have it so the water just barely overflows into the skimmer and also up high. As I said it works well but there is so much potential be lost as I would have preferred to use it with the valve at least half way.

Craig who also posts here and works here uses one at home with the air fully open, that is also what we found at MACNA on our demo tank, I suspect in time you will be able to open the air more, the water is possibly heavily laden with organics or it could be that slime the xenia put off is causing this reaction, as more is removed the skimmate will start to thicken and darken and the air can be opened further.
