Tunze 9006 w/ 9005 sump conversion kit

Roger,
I'm trying to get my brand new 9006 to break in on an established tank (I'm moving from a 125 to a 35 and the msx250 that was pulling sludge from my 125 is in no way going to fit in my new cabinet) I ran it side by side with the 250 to let it "season" for about 5 days and now have it alone in the sump. I'm a bit concerned for two reasons.

#1 The foam seems weak and is not rising in the riser.

I have disassembled and reassembled the unit ensuring that the airline is not kinked and that the venturi is seated between the pump and whatever that tube is that it goes into. The riser pipe appears to be functioning properly because the water level is going up which leads me to question

#2 No mention of this water stream from the side of the unit in the manual. Is it supposed to be doing this?

Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to having this little guy pulling out some sludge.

# 2 is totally normal, water should exit this hole and the stand pipe. How far open do you have the air screw (number of turns)? Is the skimmer making any gurgling noises?

No gurgling - its almost dead silent. I unscrewed the valve three full turns - ran 24 hours, unscrewed one more (total of four) saw no difference and pulled it out with no change in air intake either.

I'm wondering if the msx 250 was just doing too good a job - the Tunze has started building a foam head so I'm just going to leave everything well enough alone for a bit and see what happens in a week. This might just still be break in going on. Will let ya know what happens.

Latest update...it seems as if it is running too dry as the foam head is remaining very low in the riser pipe. I will try closing the air screw a 1/2 turn every 24 hours but I'm worried what that will do to the foam head. Also...on a totally different note (but not one that necessarily deserves its own thread) Is the "dry" side of the magnet holder on a 6105 able to be submersed inside the tank? - I'm working on integrating a wave/surge device on my tank and I would like to have absolutely nothing on the outside of the tank.

Both sides of the mag holder are identical and waterproof.

Water is exiting the pipe? Do you have any gurgling noises, the skimmer should be very quiet, there may be some motor noise but no strange gurgling noise.

No gurgling. Dead silent now (i love it) there is a gentle overflow of water from the stand pipe and a pretty steady stream from the hole I took a picture of above. I know I have doc's because I am starting to get protein foam in my sump. I have started to get some light mung on the inside of the riser so perhaps my expectations are just too high. I will continue to update the results of slowly closing the air screw.

Posted from my mobile - please excuse the brevity.

Rodger,

Sorry to seem like a necroposter but I am still having problems with my 9006. I never produced a decent foam head that actually would progress into the collection cup but I was at least getting some mung in the riser. But, recently the pump has stopped a few times over the past few weeks. Each time I soaked in a vinegar bath thinking that it was just dirty but upon closer inspection I think something is very wrong.

The white marks on the impeller magnet appear to be abrasions - I think the impeller magnet has been grinding against the motor block. This unit was purchased new from Marine Depot and the box didn't appear to be a refurb in any way. I'm a little hesitant about putting the skimmer back in service for fear that the motor will eat itself up (if it hasn't already) I'm wondering if this motor was ever running properly....

Any ideas or advice?

Jonathan

Without seeing it in person it is hard to say for sure but I am 99% positive the white residue is just calcium, I just don't see anyway it could be grinding on the impeller well wall. My guess is this pump has a defect and is spinning backwards, this would lead to it running hotter than usual as it wouldn't have the necessary flow for cooling and more calcium would build up. Send us the pump, we will check it out and if it is spinning backwards it will be replaced.
