Tunze 9012

Hi Roger,

I have three questions regarding this skimmer:

If I wanted to use a Tunze 9012 skimmer in my sump, what minimum water depth would I need? The water depth in my sump is 10.5".

I read comments about the reliability of magnets used on Tunze 9004 in that the wet magnets detach from the clips during use, thus resulting in skimmers floating in water. People improvised various solutions to ensure that wet magnets are attached to the body of their skimmer. Has this been addressed in the design of Tunze 9012?

I am not sure by not using Tunze 9012 in my display tank I will lose its main benefit (i.e. surface skimming). When Tunze is in a sump, weir removes surface scum and dumps it in sump. Hence, surface scum is no longer at the surface. Is there then any benefit in using this sort of skimmer in a sump?

Thanks in anticipation.

In general for a sump I would use 9410. The 9012 needs to be submerged 10-11" You are correct that the surface skimming will be less important and effective in this case. The magnet mounting clips on the 9012 are more robust (larger diameter) and even on 9004 this was primarily an issue on early units, the tabs are more robust now.

Thanks Roger. I have been advised that 9410 would be slightly oversized for my 65 (US) gallon tank in that I would not get consistent skimmate production. Please correct em if I am wrong, but 9410 is for larger reef tanks.

The 9012 is at least as strong, we would rate the 9410 for 80-265 gallons depending on inhabitants, I think it should work. The 9012 has a very comparable flow rate and bubble production.
