tunze accident!

Friday nite I made "ediot of the year". To make a long story short. I was configuring my tank equipment and in doing so I plugged in a sequence dart pump that was not connected via true union. My reaction to unplug was quick but you all I could see was a huge fountain of water. Well, the worst was the drivers of my Tunze 6100's got wet. I thought everything was fine until I hit the food timer 10minutes later and I heard the famous ringing sounds coming from one of the drivers. I quickly unplugged and removed the cover to inspect driver. Nothing burned or looked damaged but I knew it had gotten wet inside. I dried the inside as best I could but now, it works fine until you hit the food timer then it rings. Well this morning when the lights went on both drivers began to ring. I'm screwed!! is that it? Are they that sensitive? Can I replace the drivers? Roger, help! I read the two previous posts about tunze ringing so I will attempt to clean the tunzes tonight after I write this but I cant believe I will be that lucky. Anyone with any ideas please help.

Tunze stuff is the most senstive stuff I've seen for reef tanks.
I've sent my stuff back to Roger before and had a problem with a single controller that I sold and its was a little older than a month.
Still nice stuff but ULTRA senstive.

Try cleaning them with electrical cleaner and compressed air. I will work with you on the replacement costs of the drivers as they are expensive but first try cleaning them.

I forgot to mention that service was top notch, thats why I will continue to buy tunze products .
Considering the wave box now for my 180

Well I guess I was lucky to an extent. I took out the manuals and began to remove the tunzes for cleaning. Sure enough, they had so much build up of calcium that even the propeller was completely covered in calcium. I soaked and cleaned per instructions and reinstalled. The ringing sound went away on both 6100!!!?!?!?. WHAT A SCARE!! The only problem I am having is the food timer option works but I get the ringing sound out of both drivers. Can someone help me understand what is happening? Was my cleaning not good enough?

Question: When inserting the impeller assembly to the tunze, does it somehow twist and lock into place or does it just slip right in and stay in place?

Why does it ring when th food timer is activated? Aren't the tunzes off?

thanks

louis

It rings while in foodtimer mode or after it turns off? I suspect the pumps are still not sufficiently clean. Usually these sorts of problems happen when the upper bearing is stuck to the magnet. The impeller assembly just slips in.

Thanks for your advice. The tunzes function properly until I hit the red food timer button. At that moment the pumps stop operating (as designed) but the ringing begins. I have not waited the full 8-10 minutes to see if the ringing stops when the tunzes kick back on. I cant handle 10minutes of ringing.

When I attempted to clean the impeller assembly all I did was remove the screw that holds the impeller in place and removed the impeler itself. I then made sure the impeller assembly foots moved freely when you rotated them by hand. I did not completely dissassemble the impeller assembly because it did not seperate easiliy and I was afraid to damage something as the instructions for that part of disassembly was difficult to understand. That is why I am thinking my cleaning was not good enough.

It should just slide right out, in fact the one thing that would have no impact is unscrewing the propeller, I generally would never do this as the risk of breaking the screw is too high and their is really nothing that is critical in that area. It sounds like it is glued in by calcium and that the drivers have some damage possibly. Have you opened the drivers to look at them?

Roger,

thanks for all your help. I will again remove the impeller assembly and completely dis-assemble and clean to confirm if the problem lies with the pump or the driver. If this does not fix my problem I will go ahead and purchase the drivers from you. Although only 24v, I dont want to take a chance in causing a potential fire.

thanks again

Well, last night I came home and dis-assembled the tunze for a better cleaning. I completely seperated and cleaned the impeller assembly. I reconnected and everything ran properly. I activated the food timer and no ringing. AWESOME!!! I guess I did not damage as previously thought. It was a freak coincidence that they decided to fail due to calcium build up at the same time I had the little accident.

Roger, thanks for your help. customer support has justified the cost of the tunzes.
