Tunze Docking skimmers.

Can someone either from Tunze or someone else that has one sell me on the idea of a Tunze Docking Skimmer and why it would better then a typical style skimmer?

It would be running on around a 400gallon system. 265 display + sump+ frag tank+ qt.

It is actually the DOC skimmer, DOC stands for dissolved organic carbon. That is a very large set up and probably you would want to wait for one of the Master DOC skimmers to handle something of that volume. I am not sure what you mean by a typical style skimmer but these are needle wheel skimmers that are very energy efficient and have a lot of neat features that eliminate the ned for adjustment, they are truly plug and play.

would the 9020 be strong enough for my system? my typical skimmer i guess i mean one that sits in your sump and has the large collection cup on top. like a deltec or a geosreef

If your focus is SPS you should probably consider a bigger skimmer, if you are keeping things that like a bit higher nutrient level the 9020 will do well. I can tell you this, a local store was using a 9020 on a 180 display and everything was doing really well, I gave them a sample of the 9420 and now they are having some problems with the LPS and Anemones as the water is just too clean, the SPS are colored up and thriving though.

I plan on having a mixed tank... softies, alot of LPS and maybe a few SPS.. i dont like acros a whole lot but i do like some SPS... I prefer a "flowing" look to the tank

Thanks for your help Roger, its probally going to be between the 9020 or the 9420... Are both available now or are the master skimmers still waiting to be shipped?

Only the 9020 is available but we have them in stock so even if our dealers are out we have them available to ship. The 9420 should be in within a month, however they are starting production with a long list of backorders so we will see how many come in since they have to get some to all the dealers around the world.

End of March. They made a last minute change in materials to eliminate a noise issue and that is why it isn't available yet.

So the bioload we're running should determine whether we would want the 9020 or the 9420?

It's not as though one is superceding the other? They will both be sold and maintained or are the 90xx series being phased out and you moving to the recirc style?

The 9020 will remain in production as it fills a niche for a smaller in tank skimmer for larger systems.

I have over 300 gallons of water, LPS dominated tank, and a high bioload (possibly very high with my dragon moray eel;, and thinking of adding a shark tank plumbed in to the system).

I see your reply that LPS tanks may be better with the 9020 but can that style of skimmer handle the type of load I want to use it on? That is, would the newer skimmers be better in the sense that they won't overclean my water with that type of load?

With a moray, certainly bigger is better. I wouldn't worry too much about overskimming. If you can fit it in the 9420 is the way I would go.
