Tunze LED's ?

They should be available around October. They will be approx $180- $200 depending on color (white, blue or 15K). They will ship complete with the magnet holders. There will also be a controller available to dim and program sunrise and sunset and on the 15K unit vary the coloration by seperately controlling the blue and white channels, the controller should be about $150.

Are there any plans for bigger versions as these seem aimed at Nano's given the depth and spread pattern.

Would adding say 8 over a 8' x 2' x 2' tank provide enough light for softies/lps?

And did I read somewhere the controller will control a lights?

Cheers

I have a 6 by 2 * 30" at home and I plan to use 8 of the new lights. I currently use 6 Par 38 pendants on a track light and I think this is a better solution for me as I don't have a canopy though I do have an overhang 12" above the tank, but I really have no way to mount most lights. My original intent was to light my tank with Sun Tunnels and they weren't intense enough and sunlight is not consistent, in the winter it is too dim. The main limitation is heat and at this time anything much bigger would get too hot, we want to stick with passive cooling as fans just are noisy and failure prone. I think for most users the practical limit of these lights will be 4 on a 75 gallon. Beyond that, other fixtures become better solutions for price etc, but in my case I don't really have other options, I need to supplement the Sun Tunnels and the magnet mount is ideal. It is probable that in the future we will have a bigger light for bigger tanks, the technology improves rapidly.

There will be a controller that can run up to 4 lights, it will have sunrise, sunset and dimming and with the Reef model LED (blue and white) you can vary the ratio of blue and white.

Thanks Roger.

I've been waiting for Tunze to "get into the game" as far as LED is concerned. The new units look attractive in terms of power consumption, mounting options, etc - everything you'd expect on their first stab but they do seem a little underdone for medium and upwards tanks.

My 8x2x2 is split into 3 sections (eurobrace all around with 2 braces, hence 3 "holes" so I was hoping that 3 units per hole was enough.

Given most tanks have a standard of 2' (front to back) or more seems easy enough to make a unit just under 2' long, stuff some more LED's in there and away you go.

I guess I'll need to wait for the real world reviews and demo units in the shops here in Aus to see what they can really do.

Hopefully they'll announce something bigger in the near future.

Cheers

I am anxious to see what they can do myself. I also agree we will need a larger unit for bigger tanks. LED's are a tough market, it is very saturated and the basic LED's evolve very fast, these combine to make it a big challenge as you gear up to make something and before it is even ready you are a couple steps behind. That is most of why we started small, but as LED's get more efficient, we should be able to scale it up. When we started on this light more than a year ago it looked impossible as the heat produced was too much, so this gives you an idea of how fast the technology evolves. We actually had a pendant in the works 5 years ago and it required a lower intensity HQI and the LED's were just supplements and if we would have actually started producing it within a couple years it would have been very old fashioned.

Given your units are one of the few "teir 1" units being marketed as submersible you probably don't want a modular design allowing users to open them and "upgrade" the LED's as new ones come out.

Tough gig...

The modular upgrading is actually a neat idea, the problem is it eliminates any hope of waterproofing them and the circuitry can be fairly fragile. It doesn't take much to ruin the fixture with the typical LED board compared to old fluorescent and MH technology. I have seen some newer LED clusters that make this fairly feasible as the cluster is sealed and complete with optics, but the issue is they make these for street lights and broader applications, the angle of the lens is too narrow so the light has to be very high and that precludes the magnet holder idea.

Any status updates?

It's now mid-January 2013 and still no sight of these very promising LEDs :-(. Would like a pair on my Solana 34g...

We got a hand full of Marine (12K) and White units right before Christmas, Marine Depot has a few in stock. The factory just reopened and essentially we get nothing for the month of January, the last week of January is generally the first shipment of the year so it will be a while yet before we get anything at all. The LED availability is very limited, they just started production the week before Christmas so worldwide availability is very spotty, I think only a couple dozen white and marine were made. Full scale availability should begin in February.

Good news, at least to the fact that production is now ongoing and units are trickling to the distributors. Although, if Marine Depot is selling whatever they received, it must be a secret as this product can not be found anywhere on their online website.

Also curious as to why the official Tunze website (not the TunzeUSA website) has absolutely zero mention of their new LEDs under the lighting section. You would think this would be "front and center" as part of a marketing push...

Nonetheless, February would be just fine with me, so long as THIS time line is adhered to, unlike all the other missed shipping dates!

RE: Tunze LED Light Fixtures

We have stock of the marine version, 8810. Unfortunately, Tunze inadvertently shipped us European power cords for the white 8820 version. D'oh! If you'd like to be notified when correct stock arrives, click the Add to Cart option on the product page and you'll be presented with the opportunity to be notified via email.

The lights generated some interest on Facebook when we posted about them this weekend, so we'll likely shoot a video soon so folks can get a better idea of what these lights are all about.

... that, and also because we also want to take them out of the box and play with them. :spin3:

Looking forward to seeing these in action, I am thinking intially a good prospect for sump lighting or small frag section in sump where vertical space is limited at the best of times

Thank you for the feedback! We are hoping to shoot a video next week. We actually received proper stock of the white 8820 version yesterday, too.

I've been thinking about replacing these T5 strips with either Tunze strips or Build My LED strips. The tank might run a bit too high on the waterline for the Tunze lights though.
