Tunze Magnet rubber and bleach

Hi Roger, hope you are doing great.

I have a Tunze 9001 and some power heads in my QT tank which o regularly sterilize with bleach (about 5% solution). I have noticed that the rubber around the magnets seems to "œmelt", loosing color and becoming sticky after a 24h bath. Could this be toxic for the livestock?

Notice the bits of rubber that stick to my hand just by holding the magnet in my hand. It is very stickie and almost glued to my hand.

Happy holidays!

A strong oxidizer can damage silicon, it starts to deteriorate, it is not toxic but it will degrade. I would remove them before bleaching or try a much more mild solution, even 1% with a bit of dish soap is likely sufficient to sterilize the parts and won't cause this degree of degradation, the rings are available as a spare part.
