Can these nano skimmers be mounted directly in the main display tank?

Is there any safety mechanism prevent the collection cup from overflowing if it isn't promptly emptied?

Yes they can be mounted in the display or just about anywhere with adequate water depth and clearance above for the cup. As for the second question, not that I know of.

Being in tank any overflow would go back into the tank and not the floor. The denser dirtier skimmate stays near the bottom of the cup so the lighter components at the top would go back in.
