Tunze Nano ReefPack 200 - Pics, Review, and Great Customer Service from Roger!

Hey Everyone,

I placed an order for a Tunze Nano ReefPack 200 from Marine Depot a few weeks ago. The skimmer and filter unit are a great small size, so I was very happy, but when I got the unit in the tank, the skimmer wouldn't work.

The skimmer would work for a little while then overflow the collection cup, despite any adjustments I would make.

I contacted Marine Depot, and they said they couldn't do anything and should try to get ahold of Roger here on RC. (Thanks for the help MD  )

Anyways, Roger was very helpful with suggestions and comments, but when everything had been exhausted and my skimmer still wasn't working, he said he would trade skimmers with me! Roger sent out a new skimmer and I sent him mine. Sure enough, mine was malfunctioning somehow, something about the venturi and air adustment screw, and the new one started skimming beautifully.

So, thanks Roger for your help with all this, it's great to have a skimmer on my little tank!

Some quick observations:

-The skimmer is pretty quiet, but it takes a few days/weeks to get quiet
-The quality of skimmate is awesome! It can skim wet or dry!
-The build quality is okay, kind of a flimsy plastic feel, but it's sturdy nonetheless
-The skimmer is very sensitive to adjustments, so make them slowly!

I've used an Aqua C Remora, Red Sea Prizm, ER 5-2, and a CPR BakPak Skimmer.

I think that the Tunze DOC Nano Skimmer 9002 is better than all the above HOB skimmers (remora, cpr, prizm), but can't beat the ER. Overall I'm very impressed, so thanks Roger.

And some pictures of the skimmate, I have it running really dry. This tank is about a year old, and there has never been any fish in it! So no fish, and about 5 days of skimmate when the skimmer was first installed:

awesome! i just bought this Tunze DOC Nano Skimmer 9002 from marine depot as well. i was wondering how you figured out that it wasnt working? i've had it for a day now and i'm not seeing any skimmate....just a lot of bubbles at the base of the collection cup.

thx for any advice you can give!

I had the opposite problem, the skimmer would overflow the collection cup with water.

Your problem sounds completely normal, so just give it some time to break in, then it'll start skimming properly.

I have a DOC 9002 skimmer coming for my 40g mixed reef this Christmas as well, and am just curious... would the mechanical filter half of the Nano Reefpack be something I could purchase and add at a later time? Its not feasable at the moment to add it (the skimmer is already ordered and xmas wrapped :D ) but it is something I would definitely like to consider at a later time...

I've got the same problem with mine. It fills up with water in a few hours. Roger sent me a new screw but that didn't fix anything. My short term solution has been to stick a small piece of foam in the hole and then insert the screw. It keeps the bubbles about where I want them, but there is no way to really adjust the airflow. I'm now wondering if the hole itself is defective some how.

Even with the airflow problem I think it is a great skimmer and is very quiet. I'm thinking about getting the Reefpack 500 for my 75gal next year.

after a few days, i'm starting to see skimmate! and it's getting quieter which is definitely a plus since my tank is in my bedroom. thx for everyone's help.
