Tunze Pump Settings for SPS

I just installed my two new tunze 6095 pumps in my new tank and I was curious how others are running these pumps. I have them connected to an Apex controller so I have options of pulsing on and off for different time periods at different percentages. My tank is 36x24x20 (75G). This will be mainly an SPS tank with a few other non-SPS mixed in. Thanks for your suggestions!

100% flow all day every day.

Well, I am not sure if you are exaggerating to make a point or if you are serious about 100% all day. I had in mind that I should vary the flow from each side of the tank to create more random flow but not certain. So for example, 50% on one side and 100% on the other for 30 seconds and then reverse. And then maybe drop to 30%/60% in the evenings...that kind of thing. So thanks for any other comments.

if you can get alternating flow with 100% its fine. But it's way more easy to get 50-100 alternating. With two pumps a-sync.

imho alternating flow is more important then high flow.

Sorry I don't have any comment but more of a question if you don't mind.
I am thinking of getting a pair of 6095 for my 75 gallons (48x18x21). I was wondering if the 6095 powerful enough to push water easily across your 3 feet tank?

I think the whole point of having a controllable pump is to turn it on and off and run it at different power level to create wave and random currents that will get to every corner of the tank.

i have 4 x 6095 ( two are 6055 modified :)) in my dsb
this is the setup

The main point is creating random flow. Pulse donot create random flow, it just looks nice when the tentacles sway in the current to and fro . Play with your pumps and pick a flow that you like.

Thanks for your response. So when you say random flow, do you mean changing the % of each powerhead over time? I have one powerhead on each side of the tank and then I have two return outputs from my sump. Should the two pumps be running at different rates and alternating over time?

Thanks!

I have a 6095 to compliment my comeline wavebox, I'll be setting it up through the Apex to ramp up and down throughout the day, currently its just 10 seconds full 10 seconds low

with the tunze controller you can control interval timing, percentages etc. etc..

I pulse mine every 15 -20 seconds at 100% they alternate between 4 pumps at different times etc..

Not exaggerating. My pumps run at 100%. The great thing about this hobby you can do what ever you like, it's your system. The flow police will not fine you. The only wrong answer is no flow. Have fun with it.

If pulsing alternatively is the most random thing you can generate with a Tunze Controller then go for that. LPS unlike SPS are not much affected by whether you have unidirectional or random flow. With SPS corals (specially acro) unidirectional flow will make them grow in the direction of the flow. Also random flow from all sides stirs up the detritus and keeps it in suspension to be skimmed out. I hope this helps.

Agreed. I run three 6095's on my 110 SPS plus an MP40 to add some variety to the flow. Seems good to my eyes.

I'v got two 6105 and a 6095 alternating at 100% every 10 minute with storm every 6 hours..
Really like the movement of the whole tanks water alternatively and the nitrates that was creeping up has definitely dropped like a rock.
previously had it alternative with min of 25% at any time creating more turbulance on top. Wasnt happy and just wanted the whole tank alternative flow.. sps do love some 'off' time too.. more polyps than ever

As long as you have turbulent flow, you can do what ever you want with it. Alternating flow is more for show than anything else. Other people might find a benefit in alternating flow but I have never found one. Personally, I like creating more of a circular flow with both pumps at 100% 24/7 than alternating. You can run your pumps as high as you want as long as you are not disturbing the sand bed.

I have 1 6095 with additional koralias. If only 6095 is one I get corals moving 4 ft away in my 90 gallon

I will be running the same in a similar sized tank so as soon as you get the perfect settings worked out please PM me the flow settings Pat - no point both of us blowing acro frags all over the tank mate. :D

I have two 6095 in a 60 inch tank and they move tank ok. I just ordered a third, and just set up apex on my tank also. If you get some settings figured out post please. Until I figure the apex out better I will use my 7096 to control.
