Tunze silence pro on a 180 with 3/4 return

Hi, I would like to put a tunze silence pro on my 180 all-glass with 2x megaflow overflows. It has 2x 3/4" returns.

How much loss of pressure should I expect from going from the 1 1/2" to 3/4" return pipe?

Is it worth it if the head loss is to high?

That is a huge pump for a tank of that size, I think 2000 gph of return flow is not likely to work out well. You could not constrict it directly to 3/4" without a lot of noise and long term wear to the pump, you could use a reducer tee from 1.5- 2 * 3/4". 2 * 1073.040 is a more practical way to go, at about 4ft of head the flow will be 450gph per pump and that is closer to the 3-5 times turn over that is ideal through a sump. At higher turnover rates it becomes very difficult to tune a skimmer or get a top off system working properly because the flow is too rapid and too turbulent in the filter.

Thanks Roger. I checked out the 1073.040 and it is 790gph max. I am a,ready running a 1200gph Poseidon titanium and it is not cutting it.

The pump would be split with a wye to the 2nd return so I would assume that would reduce the flow further below 2000 gph and I would have a gate valve on it. I probably only need a true 1500 gph in return for my liking.

Are you looking to get 1500gph back to the tank or at zero feet of head?
 
As Shawn said, you would need two, looking at the flow curve for what you have the flow is about 1000 gph, but that assumes everything is new and running optimally. Valving down this huge pump is not a great idea, it will result in noise and could damage the pump. I have had good experiences with GRI pumps and Japanese Iwaki and they come with 3/4" and in flow rates that are more suitable.

I would like to get 1500 at zero head between the two returns so I guess 750gph each but I know this will not happen since the far side return has a longer run.
