Hey guys so i know since this is the tunze forum wha thte ansewer will be but i was thinking about upgrading the skimemr on my 30 gal sps tank right now im running a coralife super skimmer 65 which works great but i still get algea growth although my sps are all doing fine so i figured if i moved up to a nicer skimmer this would help remove the extra waste in my water.... so the question is do you think the tunze 9005 would be alot better the a coralife super skimmer 65. Also this will have to by hob as i dont run a sump of anykind ( only 17 and my moms paranoid about the tank :D ) and also the problem with the super skimmer is that it overflows alot randomly, does this happen with the tunze at all????? thanx for your time

The 9005 is in tank, not hang on tank, we don't make hang on skimmers for the exact reason you describe, they can all overflow. Algae problems aren't solve by skimmers alone. For a 30 gallon, I think what you have is probably OK. Raise your KH, keep your calcium levels and KH steady, try a KH of 14 and hold it there for 3-4 weeks. Run some phosphate remover. This will likely make a bigger improvement that a skimmer could. Remember a skimmer can only prevent nutrient build up, the ions that algaes feed off of cannot be removed by a skimmer, only the proteins and cellulose that bacteria decompose to produce the ions that feed the algae can be removed by skimming. The only quick fix a skimmer provides is it raises the oxygen levels and may raise the redox as a result.

ya sorry i didnt mean it as i have like alot of algea problems but as most know with an sps sytem im trying to get as low of nutrients as possible and was wondering if this skimmer in your oppinion would be more efficient than the super skimmer.... ill prolly get it just because of the fact that if it overflows it doesnt go on my floor but i would like to hear an opinion on how well it works.

I have not used the Super Skimmer 65 so I cannot give you an accurate opinion on that.

You would be alot better off going with a Aqua C Remora or Remora Pro for a hang on VS a Coralife skimmer. I have owned many Remora's and played with a few Coralife skimmers when I worked at Marine Depot. The only thing that could over flow on the Remora is the collection cup and that would be user error. If you are going to spend the money spend it wisely. Here is a link for the Aqua C Remora. These are great skimmers and work wonderfully.

Call and ask to speak with Jorge or Ryan these guys know what they are talking about and can get you set up with a skimmer that meets your needs and your budget.
