Only downside to that is there not. People complain more about the startups with the maximod than people do with seios. You should anticipate malfunctions if the PH is in need of cleaning, but the maxi's can have the same problems right after the assembly,including starting up turning the wrong way more consistantly than the seios unfortunately, because I agree with the output potential and low energy consumption the choice would be alot easier to make.

Mine (maxi mods) have been running for about 2 years now 24/7 without any issues. Always start up after power outage or plug in. Sure I clean them out every few months for any calcium deposit and such but you would have to do that with any pumps or powerheads anyway even the Tunze.
As for the reverse spinning, that is why there is a stopper to stop the propeller and force it to start the right direction. The people who complained about the reverse spinning never bothered to put in a stopper into their mods so....
IMO unless you wanted the fully controllable models of the Tunze and their nice electronic controllers, there is no point to a Tunze. A non-controllable Tunze is pretty just an over priced propeller driven pump.
