Tunze V Seio

I don't mean to beat a dead horse but are the non controlable Tunze worth it over a Seio 1500 or 2500? I know they cost quite a bit more

I will be setting up a 180g soon.

I have used the Seio products and like them a lot. Tunze Streams are great pumps, but I think the Seio produces a nice, diffused (though not as widely) current at a fraction of the price. The Seio can also be turned down by closing the intake flow ring.

Rio has a very bad reputation with their pumps and Tunze has the opisite reputation. Personanlly I would never put any faith in a Rio, I won one at our local reef club and was using it to keep the water change water stirred up well it died after 2 month use.

Want a better and cheaper option? Try this

It's better than the SEIO as there is no restarting issue and can be used on a wave timer. Oh and did I mention CHEAP? I'm getting 1600-1800gph out of my MJ900 using this mod.

It is a very long thread but well worth the time to read and will save you a ton of money.

Infact you can even mod your existing SEIO like this to increase performance.

I have two Seios and have never had a problem with them.

You can't mod a maxi jet to put out the flow of a Seio 2600

short term it's a great deal. long term go w/ the tunze.
you really won't be satisfied unless you get a controllable
tunze.you know that sei/rio will probably have a speed control
in the future.

xtm,
The Seio is made by Rio....

Actually the SEIO is made by Taam who also makes Rio pumps

Yeah but then your looking at $300 per Tunze which is more than I'm willing to spend.

You get what you pay for. With the Tunze you get proven powerheads that are completly controllable flow. The Tunzes have been proven to last a long time (with proper maintance) they are very reliable and have protection built into them. Plus you cannot beat the output they put out.

I'm designing my 120G tank now and I was having a real hard time sucking down the huge cost of the Tunze systems. But after adding up the cost to get similar water flow with the variable output the Tunze system wasn't really anymore expensive. Now this was comparing a Closed loop system vs. the Tunze, but flow is flow. You spend so much money making your tank a piece of art, reliable, and a place for your coral and fish to thrive in. I just could not see putting in cheap unrelibale powerheads in there. But that's just me...

I have both. If you get a controllable Tunze, I think they are worth it, they really are awesome. However if I was getting another non-controllable powerhead, it would be a Seio, not a 6060 or 6080.

Agreed with the the above. Without the controllers, there's really no point in getting a Tunze.

I still wouldn't get a SEIO though. Too many problems associated with them AND they can't be used on wave timer.

I have seen the SEIO 2600 too and it is HUGE. Would hate to have that thing in my tank IMO.

Using a 1.75" Dumas propeller on a Maxijet 1200 I can put out more flow than the SEIO 2600 easily. The Maxijet is both smaller in footfprint, works better, can be used on wave timer, and did I mention cheaper? :)

The maxi-jet mod thing is very nice, but some people have no DIY skills (like me! :) ) and just want something they can plug in and throw it into the tank.

+1

I read the moded Maxi Jet thread and got the impression that they could not be used on a wave maker for long term. Am I wrong? Great mod BTW!

Brad, I took that maxi-mod out of my tank because it was too much flow. If you want to try it out your welcome to :P. Mine only has the single nitro prop on it too. If you put a 1.75" prop that would pump out some SERIOUS amounts of flow.

I don't see why not, The maxijet inner workings are not changed at all, the only thing changed is the impeller head into a propeller. There are quite a few people using them on wave timers already without any issues. THAT is assuming you've built into your design a stopper to prevent the reverse spinning. All of my mods have the stoppers built in so they start up right every time.
