Tunze vs. Koralia powerheads

Why the huge price difference? I am looking for a powerhead for the side of my 90g opposite the side my Vortech is mounted. I know another Vortech would be ideal, but I simply can't afford two. A koralia 4 is about $40 on ebay, and a tunze 6045 (the cheapest in my GPH range) about $90. I'd rather have a 6065, but they're about $140.

Is the tunze really that much better? Hopefully people with experience with both can chime in.

The quality between the two cant be compared the Tunze is alot better. And Tunze's support if you ever need help is the best. And you can mod the Tunze easy if you need more flow. Hope that helps

Mercedes vs. Dodge

Tunze is usually compared to Vortech- not Koralia ;)

Tunze has a long track record of reliability.

Consider this, I have been running my 6100 tunzes for 5 years, just regular cleaning, and Tunzes customer service is second to none!!!

Tunze are great powerheads, but for the price so are Koralias. Customer support on Koralia is also exceptional. For me Tunze's have become irrelevant because 1) the Vortech is superior and 2)Korallias are great power heads at exceptional pricing.

Tunze Tunze Tunze. I think you get the idea. Many people have great results with the Koralia, as they do with the Tunze. But Gary's comment about Mercedes vs. Dodge is spot on. The analogy works well since you can commute just fine in the Dodge, but the Benz will give you a much more comfortable ride, longevity, resale, and technological advantage. I have a 45g tank where I was running two Seio 620s and two Modded MJ600s. I've gone to ONE Tunze 6060 and have a much better flow pattern across the tank and probably use about 80% less energy. Spend a little more now and get the Tunze, they have a great reputation for a reason, and Roger is one of the most stand up vendors I've ever dealt with.

Koralia = Al Bundy's powerhead.

I bought 2 Tunze 6045, they only lasted for a couple of months, their quality was really bad ( the clip that holds the pump broke really easy ), also the impeller shaft rusted and broke in half, bought them brand new.

Beat 8400 gph of random flow with 4 koralia magnum 6s and a red sea wavemaker pulling a whopping 50 watts total for $600 to the door with Tunze....

Hahahah---Daimer Chrysler use to own Mercedes:D

You don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get good flow. Koralias are on sale in Dr f/s this month. You won't be sorry.

Talk to Roger in the Tunze forum and he will make it right.

usually not favorably. if koralias are dodges and tunze mercedes vortechs must be bentley's. I too think being in the middle makes them obsolete. Go cheapo or go with the best.

Actually Mercedes (Daimler/Benz) were the ones who owned Chrysler. They tried to inject engineering and production sense into the company at which point we saw a spike in Chrysler sales and volume. However, the execs at Chrysler weren't happy about answering to the German way of accountability so they convinced Cerberus Capital to buy Chrysler from Daimler. That was a blessing in disguise for Mercedes as we now see where Chrysler is financially. Now Cerberus cut their losses and Chrysler is holding their hand out to the government to be bailed out.

Thanks for the advice thus far guys. I guess besides quality, I am having a hard time seeing how a Tunze would be superior. I mean, all they are are just a small AC motor and a propeller, encased in a plastic cage. As long as they are in a similar GPH range, what would the benefit of the Tunze be? If the Koralia broke in a few years I could buy a new one and still be in cheaper than the Tunze. Or, just get two Korlalias from the get go for the same price.

Does the tunze produce less heat? I know the Tunze has greater adjustability in the direction it points.

Also, is the Tunze mod just cutting out every other intake grill bar? Could this be done on a Koralia as well? Why did Tunze not just do this from the beginning?

I don't have any brand loyalties, just trying to get the best pump for the money, and the amount of money spent is always a consideration! :)

That's right, all they doo is take water in and move it out. A $120 power head goes out after 2 years get the newer model. You got your money's worth.
