Turdcake progression thread...

I know, I know... I actually started writing it and it was supposed to be a three part web series. It never got published so I will have to go back to the original plan.

Small update. Tank is going good. Have had a few minor hiccups in the last few weeks but nothing to cry about.

I feel like some of the turds have stalled a bit. Right now tank is running nutrient rich so they lost some of the pink, and are a bit dark.

Origional piece. It got toppled over and I nearly lost one of the branches because it fell right onto a huge aiptasia....Growth has totally stalled.....

Colony #1. Higher light and flow. Base is completely recovered including the underside. PE is getting better and some new growth tips.....

Colony #2 in lower light. Also base is recovered and some new growth. New growth looks amazing!

Triforce frag totally encrusted. In low light...

Pretty good job there young man.

Full color recovery in 2 months. Not shabby for a tank with blue lights...but wait....you did add T-5's didnt you? :hammer:

Had to go there. First month all led. Second month mostly led with a little touch of T5:p

Also keep in mind that I reduced the lighting intensity of my LEDs significantly when I introduced the T5. Had I left the intensity the same I bet they would look even better by now without the T5!

That said I bet if I would've had metal halide I would need to frag all those things before they overtook my tank isn't that right?

Great progress rovster. Your build with LEDs is one of my examples of LEDs work in a large tank. I've had excellent colors (and pretty decent growth) with LEDs over my nano, but I'm still pretty skeptical on them over a larger tank. Thanks for being a shining example (pun intended) of LEDs working over larger tanks.

This acro has fantastic colors too. Aren't you growing that frag of the oregon tort from reeflover62 also? Gonna be a (more) amazing tank once it's all grown out!

I do have an OT from reeflover. Its really blue. Not as blue as reeflovers, I don't think anyones is, but there's no question when you see it in person what it is. Unfortunately it grows painfully slow, but at this point it has encurusted over the plug and onto rock. I also think that as I increase my intensity of my Radions back to where they were before the T5 the colors will pop more. Seems that blues and greens do best in my tank. Pinks and reds not as much but they are still there. I have quite a few blue pieces and they are really blue!

LEDs work. If you are a color purist look elsewhere. But if you want unlimited control, low heat, and thunderstorms, get LED....(the thunderstorms thing was a joke;))

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's no blue like the Reeflux 10ks. I ran them for a little while on my old 120g, but switched to the 12k (which still popped some blue, but not as much, but it wasn't as white overall). It's always interesting what colors different halide bulbs reflect out of different corals. My XM 10ks always used to make green, red, and purple POP out of the coral, and the Reeflux popped blue.

LEDs, I'm actually getting excellent coloration out of (DIY RapidLED 29g Biocube full-spectrum kit with 2x NWs replacing 2 of the CWs), so I'm not too surprised yours is doing well either. I just had a vortech give up the bearing ghost on me, so I'm waiting for bearings to come from Boca so I can swap them out and hopefully have a working pump again, but every day that I don't see the bearings is another shade browner my acros are getting :(

I think that ultimately we'll find that a true "color purist" will go LED, since the light is specifically explicitly customizable. They'll just need a LOT of LEDs to create just the right spectrum. I just think it hasn't been done, because too many people jumped for the 3RB:1CW "whites have the whole spectrum" bandwagon which looked bland and like one shade, and gets no color reflection out of the corals, so they switch back to MH and profess that LEDs suck. (sorry, I read all of the same SPS LED threads that you read and participate in).

Just dropping in to say that the corals look awesome :)

Figured it was time for an update. Not only is this coral coloring, it's growing now. I've noticed the growth pattern is slightly different in that it grows thicker and with squared off corallites. This is likely due to the high flow it's under.

The origional frag really hasn't done much at all. It still looks good though. This will be rehomed soon to a friends tank so no more updates of this piece after this one...

This is the second frag I made from recovered nubs that broke off the colony. Lower light high flow. Has got real thick and new nubs popping up...

Eddie's half of the colony. Low light, moderate flow. This thing is looking NICE!

MY half of the colony and payment for room and board in my tank. Primo spot, high light high flow.....
