ok i'm kinda weary when it come to building things for my tank but my nitrates and phos would never drop to zero sooo i built a turf scrubber and also put some cheato down in the bottom of the bucket to and at the time i removed my protein skimmer and put it on an 55 gallon because i made a purchase of live rock that needed curing but about two weeks later i tested my water and noticed hmm my nitrates are down a lil now a month later my nitrates are less that 5ppm down from 30ppm and the phos is 0ppm down from 1.0ppm i couldnt belive it i thought something was wrong and tested my water again and has anyone else every ran a skimmerless reef tank because my tank is not having any problems running without it sorry for running my mouth (actually fingers) just been trying to get my water right for a while now.

hey-SHAKEEL, its well known that a scrubber can be a very useful tool in nutrient removal, there has been several threads on the subject, if you want to read more then just google santa monica turf algae scrubber, hes on at least 20 forums pushing scrubbers, you may enjoy his thread you may not, good luck and glad its working for you

Shakeel,
It wasn't because you removed your skimmer that your N03 and P04 dropped it was because of the scrubber. IMO I think that they are way too much work.... I use carbon dosing and I am happy to report that tonight my N03 is down to 0 :D

I agree that protein skimmers remove little nitrates and phosphates. They do however remove other harmfull organics from the water column which makes them a valued part of your filtration system.
