Two Dead Fish - Please Help.

If you face a situation where you've lost a pump, definitely cut your lights off. In still water they can really build up the heat. You might also turn a fan on the tank to try to lower the water temperature, and, in a power-out, even stand on a chair, dip up water in a pitcher and pour it from a couple of foot height for five solid minutes an hour. Sounds crazy, but it will help oxygenate, and water at a lower temperature, right down to 70, can hold more oxygen than a tank at 80. As long as the cooling is gradual, and as long as the warmup is gradual, it generally won't hurt a thing.

This is the sort of thing that happens in blackouts, and weather conditions: well to have a backup pump, definitely, and think what you will do if you have no electricity for a number of hours, particularly if you live in a region subject to severe storms.
