Two more questions...for now.

1. What makes a good tank cover? I'm afraid that if I use my glass covers that came with the tank it will only make the tank run hotter when the lights are on. Is this correct? What does everyone else use?

2. What is the best way to keep my snails from going into my over flow? There's one that seems to love making me uncomfortable by hanging out there. I moved him last night and found him in the same spot again this morning.

Thanks

You could try answer #1 for question #2, depending on the size of your snails.

Question #1 partly depends on your lighting. If you're running metal halides, heat may become a problem. With PCs or T5HOs, you might be able to use the glass covers. Give them a try one day while you're home, and check your temperature periodically.

Can't leave it open I live in Missouri and at night when I let my dogs in all the bugs come in a go for the lights on my tank. I do run MH so heat is looking like it is going to be an issue. Where can I buy eggcrate?

Best bet for eggcrate is at HD, I've never found it at a Lowes in Missouri, but maybe thats just the Columbia, Springfield, and KC areas.

Depending on the size of the bugs involved, eggcrate may not keep very many out. The holes are big enough for things like mosquitos to fly through easily. It might make a good support for a nylon screen, though.

The problem with letting bugs get into the tank is that some of those bugs will bring small amounts of pesticide with them. Many pesticides bioaccumulate, so the fish will eventually wind up getting not-so-small doses of pesticide.

Saltee dood let me know if you need any help building it. I'm not the greatest DIY' er but I found it to be very easy and anyone could do it.
