Ive been seeing frags called Tyree. Is this a special brand? a person or place?? Just wondering whats so special about a Tyree type of frag.
Thanks,
Jeff

Tyree frags are corals grown and propagated by Steve Tyree. He was one of the first people to have a lot of success keeping stony corals on a larger scale and has a collection of rare or more desirable varieties that he has been able to turn into a profitable business. It's kind of like the ORA or SA clowns in that it has kind of become it's own brand.

Some of the Tyree corals are very distinctive and colorful.

A Tyree coral should be a top notch specimen. I have a green toadstool and a Tyree green toadstool I got from Zep. The regular green is very nice, but the Tyree green glows green compared to the other. I paid more for it but I'm OK with that.
That being said, I've become rather jaded to the whole pedigree and naming thing given how much some people in the hobby are paying for the "must have" corals of the week. Also, since they don't come with paperwork you are just taking someones word for it. The rule I like to go by is if it's a really nice specimen and you personally really like it, its OK to pay whatever you are comfortable with. Just always try to do a little homework to make sure the price is in the ballpark for that coral around your area for your own piece of mind.

Step 1:
Steve Tyree gets first crack at the importers in LA, they get something nice in he gets first dibs on it and frags the heck out of it,

Step 2:
Give it a fancy name

Step 3:
Blast it with actinics and sell it for a small fortune in limited quantities

I know for a fact there are multiple folks with vendors licenses that frequent the LA wholesalers and transhippers on a daily basis hand picking, and get just as much of a crack at stuff as Steve. I have also heard from people that I would trust to know that Steve is in the hobby for the right reasons and profit is not at the top of that list. He is an entrepreneur, yes, but aren't we all? Its an expensive hobby. ;)

Tyree IS his 'fancy name' ;)

I have seen enough Tyree corals over the years to say, IMO, most of his 'named' corals are very nicely colored and not at all misrepresented with a ton of actinic lighting in his pics. I'm sure he uses 20K lighting like most of us to get the best pic possible of his corals. There are definitely more than a few other online vendors we all get a chuckle out of, when we visit their websites, that use the old 'actinic blast' photos though, yes. I dont think Steve is one of those though, IMO.

I dont know Steve personally at all, but I really think the previous post was a bit harsh toward a man that has been in the hobby a very long time, way before the crazy pricing we see now days, and has contributed a great deal of his time to it. We sometimes tend to forget all we owe to guys like Steve, Anthony Calfo, Steven Pro and all the other folks that have been in the hobby since before radial tires were invented ;) and helped boost the hobby to the level it is today.
