tyree most wanted capricornis

I just saw this thread for the first time. So let me go back to page 3 or 4 of this thread and ask the obvious question. So, what happened to Mike Paletta's colony?

dgas,

I shipped a piece to Mike P. even though he has a piece that looks very much like the same coral that I have. I guess he wanted to compare the two.

The only thing that looked a little different was that his had not produced the high ridges but that could be due to many factors and it does not mean that it won't eventually.

OK i've seen people selling the Leng Sy cap. one website has 'em. and on a thread 28 people replied to a pole saying hey had 'em. one guy said that it's not lost. it has made a come back and Steve confirmed his piece. OK so is it back?

Here is my cap. Although it is not from the Leng Sy cap, I feel is definitly one of the closest representations to the picture on Tyree's website. This came from pucci at xtremeaquatics.com. I have seen other caps that people are calling the Leng Sy and I don't see the resemblence to Tyree's photo

MarLooney,

I think this is where we are today, Per what Steve stated below back on August 22, 2003.

"...Well it appears that the original Leng Sy was lost. I have seen no substantial evidence that anyone kept it going for more then a year. So in this case the linneage issue is a moot point. Now if someone is falsely claiming to have the correct linneage when they dont, that is another issue and one that should be dealt with, since there are collectors out there who have been paying $200 or more for the 'real Leng Sy'. I have sold no such corals no have ever claimed to have had the 'real Leng Sy', since 1996. It may turn out that the linneage can be established, but it has not been established as of yet IMHO. If you are not into the linneage issue, no big deal. There are however reef collectors who are.

What we are debating now is who may have the best copy. A purple edge on a dark green Monti with bright green polyps is a monti that is similar to Lengs in color. The width of the purple edge and the height of the nodules has not been duplicated by any other monti that I have seen images of. Rafael's monti is the closest I have seen to date. If anyone else has something similar please post images or links to images...."

Greg,

That coral looks very similar to what I have. I can't confirm the color on the polyps from your image since it's not close enough.

I do think that there are a fair number of duplicates out there but none have definitly been traced back to the Leng Sy colony. And that includes my morph.

Here is a picture of one of my frags.

This frag is still a baby (under 2 inches) so the nodule growth is not very evident yet. But it is beggining to emerge if you look closesly.

The purple edge is more on the purple/blue side since it is growing under PCs. It turns a Purple/Red-pink edge under VHOs or 20ks.

Here you can also see the light colored polyps in relation to the green part.

OK! Here's is something very interesting, I have here 7 different pics of purple rim, you be the judge.
What's funny to me is that everybody wants to trace the coral back to a certain person, witch is also fine. I do the same..
So they ask a so call expert, and this expert would reply:
"well, this particular coral doesn't have white polyps"
So another hobbyist post a pic with white polyps, now, the expert will say:
" Well, it does have white polyps but if I remember right, it had more vibrant colors, and it has more prominent nojos....etc....and so on.
My point is: I think that. corals will look completely different in another tanks and also will morph in to different characteristics, thru out the years.
I got this particular coral here, back in 1999 if I remember right.
This coral was from Japan collected from the wild.
No connection what-so-ever from the Leng Sy coral, yet at least one of this pics has one characteristic of that coral, and the so call expert, the last time I read the thread now is saying that:
the Leng Sy corals is from China...????

Here is the coral that I sold wile back to Gumhead, and I know he has a much better pic than this one.

And if you guess this corals are all from the same colony......
You're right!!
Hope I didn't offend anybody, just trying to make a point.
This is not a Leng Sy coral, this is my coral!! :D

hhahah! funny Carlos! We do understand what you are saying. Your not offending anyone. People just try to dig into things too much and chaos more confusion than it really is. :)

Cheers to you Carlos!
Y que Viva BRASIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brasil 2 Mexico 0 this evening!

I will post pictures of mine later. Mine comes from Rafael and it looks a lot like yours bro.

yeah that reminds me of a friend of mine. she grew a regular orange cap under a 28W PC in her nano. growing extremely slow under those conditions it developed very deep ridges and became a really thick plate. now under 250W HQI it's growing flat like a reg cap. just goes to show what Carlos was talking about. the debate on what the coral looks like doesn't matter. if it looks like crap and originally came from Leng Sy then it's his cap. if it's absolutely 100% like the pic on ReefFarmers but didn't come from Leng Sy's colony then it's not it.

here's the reason i dug this thread out of the dust. on this RC thread a pole was posted and 28 members clicked that they had the Leng Sy cap. i find that extremely hard to believe. one post stated...
...no it is not dead mine was looked at by steve and he agreeded it was the one
and after that...
... correct, the leng sy was reincarnated awhile ago contrary to what was thought early on.

i also found it for sale by one of the coral farmers of exoticreefs.

so can anyone confirm any of these actually trace back to Leng Sy or are they just look-a-likes?

I honestly dont see a difference in the Leng Sy cap and the ones that Carlos put. I cant believe that cap is being sold for $100 on exoticreefs.

Nice stuff Carlos. I always thought that your cap was as nice as any. Doesn't take a backseat to any cap imo.

It's a cap, people!:D I guess if you build up the hype about it, some will think it's worth the $100! Too many similar at better prices!;)

I agree, Madison!:)
Unfortunately, it looks just like this in my tank.:(
Purpledge04.jpg

I've acquired 3 purple rimmed caps and all have pretty much lost the purple edge. My luck, even the Leng Sy would do the same and I'd be out $100!

Guess I will have to get inline for a frag of Carlo's purple rim. His stuff looks so good and seems to do well for me in my tank.

Rich, here is my soon to be famous Cali_reef purple rim cap. :D
