UGH!!! My erectus keep dying :-(

Ok guys...I haven't given up yet...down to s solid 4, but they look good??? Who has ever used Dan's artemia Enrichment?

and BTW Peka...you are a seahorse saint!!! I can't keep up with 4 stinkin' fry!!!

There are a lot of us using Dan's Food for enrichment.
As for not keeping up, just wait until you finally get your method working for you and then you'll streamline your method until it becomes much easier to deal with.
Just remember that you can spend the same amount of time raising 100 fry as you do raising four once things are under control.

Hey Laurarca....

I thought you promised us pics of your set up?
Some pics of your fry would be nice too! :fun4:

OOOHHH!!! I will!!! But honestly, these dang lil' 4 ponies that I have left take more time than my newborn ever did!!!! I will...PROMISE!! But first I am on candy duty tonight...;-)

ok rayjay...here I come again....

On the Dans Feed package it states this:

add at a rate of 1/8 of a teaspoon per liter and aerate....aerate what??

should be blended in a blender for 2 minutes first and poured through a 50 micron screen...why?

how much of this enrichment, which is in RO water, do I add to my enrichment tank?

I guess I am saving the left over in the liter bottle in the refrigerator? How long does it stay good in the fridge?

I really did complete elementary AND high school, but this is about to kill me...:fun4:

IDK about the blending and filtering, but I assume the directions read add 1/8 tsp. of the blended/filtered mix per ltr. of water the BBS is in. Thats how the directions on the selcon I use read. My BBS are all in 1ltr. of water, so I add a similar amount, but my directions say 10 drops.

Aerate (again an assumption) refers to aerating the water that you added the enrichment to for the BBS to 'eat'. Like in my set ups I either have air going in thru the bottom of the bottle, or a rigid air line in the bottle(going all the way to the bottom), connected to air hose to the pump. My directions specifically say to aerate well after adding the enrichment

You aerate the salt water plus powder mix that you have in the enrichment container.( After the blending of course)

should be blended in a blender for 2 minutes first and poured through a 50 micron screen...why?
The blending first of all makes most of the powder into smaller particles that suspend in solution better and of a size the artemia can uptake, but some particles still remain too large, and, foam is produced and can be captured along with any possible larger particles by pouring through the screen/mesh.

how much of this enrichment, which is in RO water, do I add to my enrichment tank?
As noted, you use 1/8th teaspoon of Dan's Food per litre of SALT water in the enrichment container. (Not 1/8th teaspoon of already blended mix, and not in R/O)
In other words, if you are using a two litre pop bottle to enrich, you probably only have about 1 1/2 litres of enriched salt water so you would put a bit of salt water in the blender with one and a half measures of a 1/8th teaspoon, blend it for two minutes and pour through the mesh/screen into the enrichment container and top up to 1 1/2 litres. Add the air and the artemia.

I make a fresh batch up for each enrichment as I don't want any chance of bacteria developing in a stored portion.

Make sure you aerate enough as too little and the artemia can die quickly.
The aeration keeps the enrichment particles in suspension as well as creating turmoil at the top for proper gas exchange.
Also, too much enrichment can also cause death so stick to the recommendations.

OK...here is the tardy post pix of my present set up...I don't want to breath the wrong way as of now I have 3, what seems to be, very strong ponies left. I did lose one this morning, but it looked weak from the start. They are contantly snicking and resting...presntly, I am keeping the small light on 24/7 to build their strength?? I know the BBS weaken, so I clean and replace during the day. Before I go to bed, there are just enough left to caary them through the night. Thoughts?? THANKS EVERYONE!!!

Hey all!! My 3 seahorses are still going strong at about 6 weeks now...I posted a question in another thread, but I guess I can hit you all here too!!

OK...they are still on enriched BBS and I have tried to mix it with cyclopeze and chopped mysis, and they'll have none of it. I find it still sitting or swirling through the tank before my evening water change, which then gets removed. Any suggestions, please? Thank you so much in advance...Laura

Well with my reidi fry I couldn't get them on frozen of anything including the cyclopeeze.
I finally took enriched brine shrimp juveniles and drained them and put them in the freezer for a half hour or so.
Then I mixed some of these with live enriched ones and each day increased the amount of dead ones with less live ones and eventually only the dead ones.
Then I started blending in store bought frozen brine and eventually store bought frozen mysis.

Interesting idea ray.... never thought of that one.....

I would suggest putting a couple pieces of frozen mysis in the tank along with the brine and cyclopeeze. I have had some that just grabbed the frozen mysis and ignored the cyclopeeze....

And you are doing a fantastic job... raising fry is not an easy thing to do.. pat yourself on the back for those three!!

RayJay and Peka....THANK YOU again!! I will give both ideas a try...and yes Peka, I have no life, but I have 3 baby seahorses!!! It's crazy, but I love it...;-)
