OK, not a pom pom but they look like tiny pom poms not xenia. I have tried multiple times to get rid of them and the keep coming back. I can not remove the rock as it is the centerpiece of the layout and VERY LARGE, at least 25lbs. If I remove the rock, I throw the whole tank into confusion.
Is there a species that eats this crap? I let it get WAAAAAAY out of control and now its popping up in other places.

i remember seeing that stuff in aquaworlds tanks awhile ago. they told me it was super hard to get rid of, and just one piece breaking off will regenerate. i didnt notice it in their tanks the last few times i was there, maybe give them a call and ask how they got rid of it

not sure of the correct name, but good luck!

To the sand! WOW! I wish I could help but that sounds like an infestation. Cutting it off seems even more dangerous than anything else... itll spread everywhere.

UUUUUGH.

COLONIAL STINGING HYDROIDS
Hydroids come in many shapes and sizes. If you have something that sorta resembles a feather duster, but not really... look into hydroids. They can pack a mighty sting so it is good not to let them grow next to corals. They can be brown like these, white, pink, or other colors.

They will sting corals and clams and are invasive. Manual extraction will be necessary.

yikes dude...

You have two choices in my opinion, one is less invasive, but probably less effective. The other is very invasive, but will completely get rid of them.

1. Spread kalk paste or epoxy over the entire colony, covering it completely. This should smother and kill them. The only problem you may is if by smashing them they release "eggs, spores, etc" into your water column and are spread through the tank.

2. Remove the rock and cook it. Hell, let it sit outside for a few weeks and completely dry out and die. This, of course, will disturb your entire setup.

I have never had these, but have read that they are one of the most difficult pests to get rid of. Let me know if you need some help dismantling your rockwork.

thanks Jared, I will see if I can take care of it by myself. My problem is keeping my litttle one away while I mess with that stuff.

I have been researching online all day and no one really has a solution.
I don't really want to mess with kalk and too many to manually extract. I have to take that damn rock out.

IT IS THE BIGGEST PIECE THAT IS KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER. FIGURES.

I got them on a frag I got from anfrag swap a few years ago. Put it in the sump with no light for a week and they were gone. The frag survived also.

I like the blow torch idea, video it if you do that!

I would love to blow torch those creeps. Instead, I took the rock and the 2 surrounding rocks out. I moved some corals around and as much rock came out, it's hardly noticeable! Now I just have some of them on my bulkhead wall in the corner far away from everything. What an ordeal. I read about the ice cubes this afternoon but I didn't have time for that.

Beware the blowtorch. I did that. While it killed the hydroids in the torched area, it also set my tank into a mini-cycle that resulted in a pretty good algae bloom.

Anyone know what they eat? Can they be starved?

Yinzer...did you have any success with the removal of you hydroids? I have a small colony I want to get rid of and i was wondering what method you used and if it was successful.
