Ultimate Clown System.

Hey guys..Well, some of you may know me..some of you may not..yet..lol..But those who do know im a clownfish freak..i love clownfish (specially my onyx)..

Recently i have a beautiful SPS tank..I have lots of gorgeous stoneys, clams..and fish that i love..including my 2 regal tangs..my pair of square back anthias..but mainly my tangs..i really really love them..lol..

Anyways, my gf and i are in the plans of moving to a nicer place..its gonna be our first home together so its a big plunge..and unfortunately the tank may not be able to come with us, so i will have to sell it off..well, part of it..

Here's where i need your help:

I know there are some people here that love clowns as much as i do..ebryoguy comes to mind, findingnemo comes to mind and many others..so im guessing if i gather yall's knowledge to put together this project, it will look bad*ss..so..what would take to build the ultimate clownfish lagoon (for those of you that have seen my pair of Onyx..and im not being coincided..you know they are kind of nice..)..i.e:

-What type of tank (size?..shape?)
-Lighting
-Inhabitants
-Flow
-subtrate
-misc.

I really want to be able to keep my clowns, they are my prized possesion..so, i would really appreciate any help you guys here wanna give.. Thanks alot!!!

a 24x24 x 16" cube, with 2 surge tanks fireing out of the back wall bouncing off the front glass. a single 250 HQI ballast firing a single ended reeflux 12KK lamp. Deep sand bed (except for the front corners where the surges fire). Load it with some zoas or SPS and a gigantea anemone. Those clowns should have the best;)

Hey Rod, your opinion means alot!!-- Ive heard alot about "surges"..but dont really know what they are..isnt it that "flushing the toilet effect"? (pardon my ignorance)..

ireef

as i was reading i thought for a moment you were selling your clowns ~! :) my hr actually went up :)

i agree, the best way to showcase your awesome clowns is with mhs. i have clowns under both and its so much nicer to see them in every detail.

as for flow, the more the better. every video ive seen of clowns in there natural habitat are "dancing" in strong current.

i also have ONLY scarelet hermits, nessarius snails and a cleaner shrimp in all my clown tanks. i personally like scarelets bec they seem to be the most peaceful of all the hermits/crabs ive had. cant risk anything going after your clowns.

whatever you do, i would highly recommend a glass cover atleast! ive heard so many stories of clowns jumping, even after years in the tank. does it look at nice? prob not but its all about the clowns :)

congrats! and good luck with the move.

Im really feelin' Rods' suggestion about a surge, but i dont like the toilet look of some ive seen (on top of the tank).. is there a way to go around that and have the same effect?.. i also LOOOOOVE surface water movement..but that tank wouldnt be big enough for Tunze power..I can already see the rockwork..maybe 2 small separate islands....a little canyon in between..BOOYAKASHA!!!..im drooling as i type..

Im keeping 2 of my 3 250w MH's..So im sure that would be more than enough lighting..

Any more suggestions?!?!?

I am also trying to put a small Anemone (S. gigantea)/clown fish (Percula) tank together. I was going to use a 30 inches cube tank but decided that this is too big. I am now thinking of a L30XW24XH24. I want to use black acrylic to section off 6 inches for sump/pump/refugium chamber. The show tank volume is a 24X24X24 cube. I will light it with 250 W HQI. I am thinking of using one of these sleek unit that set on the tank with legs. I may use one with PC light build in also.
Rod, can you give us more information on your surge tanks like how much volume, how high and the surge mechanism? I want to try to use your experience as guide since you are so successful in maintain your S. gigantea. I will take my time and set this up so it will be just right.

ireef69,
I hope you don't think I hijack this thread. We really want the same thing.
Anybody else input is most welcome and appreciated

Mihn- of course not!!!..Hope you find anwers to your questions here aswell!!!!..we can all build our dream clown tanks here..all the people posting have tremendous experience and knowledge.. im interested in seeing how your project goes.

My ideal clown setup would be a 3X3 matrix of 30gal cubes.

250W Mh on the top 3 tanks with a pair of clowns and host in each.

T5's on the middle row with clowns and hosts

Then NO or VHO on the bottom row with clowns/juvie growout.

probably just put a couple bulkheads in each and run them into a common sump/refugium. I really like large display refugia but that's another thread :D

I don't know about iReef69, but I was not thinking of breeding them. Just a nice display tank of Anemone and a nice Percula pair. Maybe a few very colorful SPS and ultra Maxima, ultra Crocea and maybe a blue Squamosa (unlikey because this guy get too big). Ofcourse I need to arrange to keep the heavy current needed for the S. gigantea from affecting the few clams.

Then simply replace the third row with a nice 100 gallon display refugium reverse lit.
Thanks, but I think we both want a smaller easier to handle systems. I wanted a killer system that is relatively maintained free and does not cost several hundred monthly to run. Unlike iReef69, I have three sons ages 8,7, and 4 months old. Time wise, I have to choose between family and salt. I chose my family but this aquarium bug infection I had would not let me be.

IMO, water flow is one of the critical factors in keeping a S. gigantea. I am thinking of one or two surge tanks using a Carlson type trouble and maintain free mechanism. I just don't know how high to place the tank, how much volume and what size plumping. I will put these on top of the sump chamber of my aquarium. I may end up have to have a sump because the water level may change too much in the aquarium using a surge tank without a sump.

Here is some information on the Carlson Surge Device:

I couldnt agreee more about water flow and giganteas. and I beleive thatthe surging action is key. I have some pics (i think) of some of teh cube systems that I deiscribed on my other computer. Ill try to post them a little later. I did design a cool system to house dual surges and it turned out awesome(if I do say so myself). I beleive there may have been pics posted here before somewhere. Maybe posted by a guy named pioneer if any want to surce surge tanks under his name.

My oldest gigantea has been in surge tanks since 95-96. It has been moved many times to different systems, all designed around the anemone and surge tanks. The anemone is still attached to the same rock over 10 years later.

My newest purple gigantea has trippled in size in a years time and hasnt moved since I put it into the system

FWIW, I have used many carlson type surges, but after building the borneman style back in 98, I will never use a carlson style again.
At the moment I have 22 borneman surges running and every one of them is flawless, and they dont require a big pump for them to function properly.

Ill be back with pics a little later

That is some of the 2" surges and they are in a 3x3 tank. The anemone is slightly deflated so its hard to see the wave action against the anemone. Thanks Tony!

the one inch models dont put out nearly as many bubbles. Almost none with the exception of a small burb at the begining and a little fizz at the end of the surge..
here is a corner model with the surges hidden in the canopy

Hopefully I can find some pics with the purple gigantea in it

I dont know if i would go with a surge system or not, i really dont like the look of them..although i know they would be great for the tank..Is there something else that may have the same effect but not the same structure?..I know flow is VERY important for a clown lagoon tank..and like i mentioned before, the tank will be way too small to try and do the Tunze thing..Maybe powerheads on a wavemaker will do the trick??..

Anyways, as far as a tank goes..would a corner be better than a cube?..any input??..Thanks!

Sorry minh I guess I misread the thread. I thought it was putting together "the ultimate clown system", I didn't realize it was only for posting systems for you.

Rod, I rememer seeing your corner surge in the other thread. Looks really nice. Someday I'll have to experiment with surges. You should see the surge they have at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Of course it it a little bigger than our tanks.

IMO..The Ultimate Clown System would be a smaller tank since clowns dont really need a monster tank (100 gal+ for a pair of clowns???..)..But a smaller tank 30-40 gal. Big enough for a nice anemone and enough room for a kicka.s aquascape..

Also, what about a gadgets and other things??:

-Skimmer
-filter for carbon?
-cheato fuge?

Actually it was for iReef69, but I sorta hijacked the thread. We actually trying to put up the same sort of system. iReef69 needs it quicker (he is about to move) while I am putting it together slowly.
