Ultimate Clown System.

But my dream tank that i have now is going to be my carpet tank for my saddle clowns that i plan on getting.

r00nmac- I had a SCWD in mind...A manifold with 2 outputs shifting current throught the day..or what about an OM super squirt??....

I dont think a school of clowns is "do-able" on a small tank. I tried it on a 125gal. (3 B&W ocellaris...)didnt work..I tried again (5 clarkiis)..no luck..Tried once more (4 percs) no go...So it is virtually impossible..And the setup is really nice, lots of rock, a very nice aquascape, anemones, coral..friendly fish..and still no success..Thats why im focusing on my 2 Onyx..not because i wantt them to mate..but because they are gorgeous specimens of the "breed".

Do a 55 then, with one magnifica to start out with. And slowly but surely it will become heaven for them, since you only want to keep two go with that idea. But that is still my dream 20x15x12 full of clowns and reef fish. But it will be one big tank.

Since Rod is so shy about showing off his Onyx clowns, I'll post a few photos that I took there a few months ago. I recently purchased five more of his clowns for my new Hex tank and they are thoroughtly enjoying their new home.

Okay, here's the photos: :D

First: Surge action:

Now, if you have a business and can give your clowns some daily TLC, provide nice cozy homes for the clowns and anemones, a little surge here and there and finally a great food source (Rods Food), you've got an almost perfect setup. Oh yea, you need to have an expert (shy or not) like Rod around to keep you going!

There you have it!

Boyd ;)

Minh,
The 24x24 x16 cube that my purple is in has (2) 1" surges (Borneman) firing out of the back wall an bouncing off of the front corners. The surges are about 3' - 4' above the tank, and are bade out of salt buckets. The one inch models do not put out nearly the amout of bubbles that the 2" models do, nor nearly as many as any size carlson style. the 2" models that Tony posted a video of and the picture that Boyd posted (Thanks Boyd) do dump a lot of bubbles, but everyone in that tank is very happy. (that tank is a 3x3x16",,, not 24x24..) The clowns spawn in the path of one of those surges. Those 2" surges are pretty strong, They have a 4' head on them and finally cause the acrylic tank to fail at the seams. I built a glass 3x3 as a replacement.

In my 2x2, I use a single 2" stand pipe for a drain. It will keep up depending on the frequency of surges and depending on the water level before both surges fire. When I put the stand pipe in I left it so I could remove it and adjust if I needed. I didnt need to, but I could have pulled the pipe out and drilled more strainer holes (or shorten the length/height), which would lower the "starting water level. Then, if both fire at once, there is extra room for the water while the drain pipe catches up. It will catch up before the next round fires.. Am I making any sence here ? :) Maybe Tony will stop by again someday with his camera and take a vid of the smaller system :p Ill see what I can do about pics of teh smaller system/surges. If you get around to building before I get the pics, feel free to click on my lil red house to get my phone number and give me a call.

I'll be there Saturday morning...mike will be out also...I can actually take much better video footage with my camcorder, i'll have to dig it out....I hope you got a fresh batch of Rod's food made up cuz we'll need some, also I'll need some salt water of course, and also looking for a nice mandarin, I feel like I can finally add one......

Well, i think i may post my current system for sale this weekend..I still need to setup a small tank for my clowns. I guess im gonna go with a cube 35-40 gal. And maybe run a SQWD or an OM Super Squid for flow..hopefully that would be enough flow for a cool anemone to be happy. Im gonna keep all my SPS, clams, zoas and some rock, the rest is gonna go for sale.

Ok now after reading this thread.... I think Embryo or iReef should start a "Onyx Showoff" Thread. Just to see what patterns people have come up with.

Embryo- I ended up selling the 24G Nano locally... he is having it drilled. (a little over the top eh?)

Rod- I should be ordering some of your Onyx here shortly. When is the next batch due up?

Are any of you coming to MACNA here in Houston? If so I would love to meet you all and chat about your clowns and pick all of your brains! LMK!

Brett

Theres a huge Rod's Onyx thread full of pictures...Embryo has a very unique jigsaw clown..maybe he can post a pic, but here's a couple of pictures of my pair.

Thanks Rod. Your posts are perfectly clear to me. I need to pick your brain a little more.
The size of my display tank is essentialy same as your tank, 24X24 cube, but a little deeper. There are several more questions (essential) about your system I love to have the answer to:
1. What is your water level from the edge of the tank? Does the discharge produce much surface waves (at the corner). I don't want to have water splash over the edge.
2. What is the discharge volume of each of the surge tank? (or about how many inches of the salt bucket from full to empty surge tank?)
3. Where are your discharge outlet? How far from the surface of the water and how far from the wall?
4. About hoe often does your surge fire? or what pump do you use for your surge tanks?
Thanks in advance.
Minh

Ok, ive been brainstorming all weekend long, and came to the conclusion that if im gonna so all this, i should think bigger..so..im going for a large cube..more on the shallow side..should be great for the clowns/anemone. This way, i can do the tunze thing..and have plenty of room for corals/fish..but specially my clowns.

Why not keep the same setup?

Because my dream tank is a big, shallow cube..and since i will be moving and buying stuff..might as well just go the long eay and go with it..shall be interesting, going for a big acrylic cube.

You might want to think about using one of the overflow cubes. They look great. Not sure if you've seen them before but they are open top and built into a larger arcylic tub, the water flows over the top edge of the tank so it is always prefectly full. It's great for viewing clams and corals that look best from above.

It was a very nice, unique tank.. Im still looking here in town for someone who does acrylic work..I want my new tank to be acrylic..
